Gaius was talking to Arthur while you and Merlin tended to some sick people. A sickness had spread quickly and you and Gaius had been swamped with work because of it.

"This is the fourth case of sweating sickness I've seen today. Under normal circumstances I'd go and investigate-" Gaius started to explain but Arthur cut him off.

"Of course. I understand." he said.

"Might I make a suggestion, sire? Why not send Y/N and Merlin in my place?" Gaius suggested. You quickly looked at Gaius. Arthur seemed to be in thought.

"Do you think they could handle it?" he asked Gaius. Gaius nodded.

"Y/N is very knowledgeable in the medical field. She should be able to diagnose it and cure it." Gaius said. You felt some pride swell in you at Gaius' confidence in you.

"And if she can't?" Arthur questioned. You understood that Arthur was just concerned for the people, but did he seriously have to ruin your moment like that.

"She can report her findings to me then." Gaius answered. Arthur nodded.

"That sounds like a good idea." Arthur agreed.

"Are you sure? What about you, Gaius? Don't you need help here?" you asked. You didn't want to leave Gaius to get overwhelmed with everything by himself. Gaius chuckled and nodded.

"I'll be fine." he assured you.

"Alright. I'll start packing then." you said.

"I will too." Merlin said.

Everyone was going to be heading out the next morning so you studied up on your medicines during the night. You heard a soft sigh from behind you.

"Will you come to bed?" Gwaine asked. His hair was messy and he looked sleepy.

"I can't. I need to make sure I'm ready for any situation." you said. Gwaine walked closer to you and wrapped his arms around you from behind.

"You'll be fine. Gaius wouldn't send you if he didn't think you were capable. Besides, you won't be very useful if you pass out from exhaustion." Gwaine reasoned.

"I'll be fine." you huffed. Gwaine sighed and nuzzled your neck.

"You're amazing. You'll do fine. After Gaius, you're the smartest person I know." he mumbled. You felt a blush creep onto your cheeks. You stared at your studies for a second before sighing.

"Fine. You win. I'll go to bed." you gave in. Gwaine happily hummed and released you from his embrace. He walked to the bedroom and you trailed behind him. You felt the exhaustion hit you as soon as you laid down and you curled up next to Gwaine and quickly fell asleep.

Gaius gave you his medical bag before you left for Longstead the next morning. Everyone set out. Leon estimated that the group would reach the destination by nightfall. When everyone arrived, John, the elder of the town greeted your group. "Where's Gaius?" he asked, scanning your group for the man.

"I'm sorry but he was needed in Camelot. I will help in anyway I can." you answered politely.

"We're living in fear for our lives. We need a skilled physician. Not some girl." John said. You felt your confidence shatter.

"I..I've studied under Gaius for years." you managed to get out. Gwaine, sensing that you were upset glared at John.

"Her name is Y/N and she was appointed acting physician by the king himself." Gwaine defended you.

"Where are they?" you asked, in reference to the patients. John pointed in a direction and you and Merlin headed there. You checked all the patients when you reached the temporary ward. "They're barely alive. How long have they been like this?" you asked John.
