"Are you safe?"
This question hit Shoyo like a ton of bricks. All the air left his lungs, his eyes widened, and he didn't know what to say. He could see Nishinoya start to worry, like what he said was wrong.
Nishinoya felt like he really fucked up this time. He could see Shoyo's eyes widen like how he did the other times he started to panic.
"Shoyo?"
"Um, no..."
Nishinoya knew this answer already, but he was shocked and proud that Shoyo was able to say the words himself. He got a determined look on his face.
"Would you like to stay with me? My mom is always on business trips and I don't have a dad to worry about, so it gets pretty lonely around here. We have an extra room. "
Shoyo was at a loss for words. What should he say? Would it be rude to decline the offer? Would he be able to get away with it, or would he just bring trouble to Nishinoya-senpai? He knows that the only reason he got away with not going straight home tonight is because his dad is out drinking, and his mom knows better than to tell for fear of the repercussions.
"Nishinoya-senpai, I-"
"If you're worried about safety, we can tell Tadeka-Sensei what's happening, or maybe the police? I'm not going to ask you to tell me everything, but maybe I can help?"
Shoyo looked at the look on Nishinoya's face and realized that if he said no, Nishinoya would tell the police, Takeda-sensei, and Coach Ukai on his own. He sighed a little, and started crying.
"Shoyo! I'm so so so sorry, I didn't mean for you to cry! Are you okay, did I say something wrong?"
Shoyo shook his head, and showed Nishinoya a watery smile.
"Nishinoya-senpai. You're the only person who's ever cared enough to help me."
Nishinoya sat back in shock, unsure whether to be disgusted at the world or proud of himself. He watched Shoyo's smile fall and pankc start to set in once more, and he grabbed a hold of Shoyo.
"Do you like loose or tight hugs when you get your hair played with?"
Shoyo stopped for a second, surprised that Nishinoya truly cared this much. Nobody had ever asked him that question before.
"T-tight, please."
Nishinoya hugged him tighter, not letting Shoyo go. Both of them cried, until a ringtone jolted the both of them apart. It sounded unfamiliar to Shoyo, but Nishinoya answered it right away.
"Sorry, Shoyo, it's Asahi. I won't tell him anything, okay?"
Shoyo nodded his head, trembling but with a small smile on his face. He didn't remember the last time he felt safe, and that's the only word he could use to describe Nishinoya's home and his embrace. It was clean but lived in, and his cat, Hana, was adorable.
While Nishinoya was on the phone, Hana came up to Shoyo and curled in his lap, purring. She seemed to know that Shoyo craved warmth, protection, and comfort. She yawned and stretched as Shoyo petted her.
