I stood nervously outside Tobias' apartment, working up the courage to knock. I finally decided that if he didn't want to come and talk to him, I have to come and talk to him.

I close my eyes and decide to go for it.

Tobias opens the door, a look of surprise on his face. He obviously wasn't expecting me.

"Uh, hi?" he said.

"Hi," I reply softly.

Silence descended upon us as we stood there avoiding eye contact.

I cleared my throat, "Can I come in?"

He didn't say anything. Instead he nodded and sat down on the couch, patting the spot next to him, gesturing for me to sit.

I sit down next to him. I quickly start talking before another period of awkward silence could descend.

"I came because you owe an explanation and I intend to give it to you," I paused taking my breath before starting. "The bureau was planning some top secret life serum that resurrects anyone from death. They began developing this life serum around the same time that they developed the death serum. The ashes you received weren't my ashes, they were some other girl's ashes, who died around the same time as me. It took a month for me to wake up because I had been dead for 3 days before they injected me with the serum. They made me stay there for all this time so that they could collect data and make sure that everything was running smoothly and that I wouldn't suddenly die." I let out a nervous chuckle but quickly continue with the story when I see his face, telling me that I shouldn't be trying to make a joke out of death.

"The reason why I came back was because some idiot blew up a part of the bureau and people suspected it to be us, because after all, they kept me there for all that time, cutting me off from the rest of you. Peter knew that if he stayed the suspicions would soon be placed on him so we both made the choice to leave."

I expected him to be kind of relieved to hear the truth but instead he looked furious.

"So if the idiot didn't blow up the bureau you never would've come back? You would've stayed there being their lab rat for the rest of your life?!"

"Tobias I-"I was cut off with the rest of his rant.

"You were going to let us think that you were dead for the rest of our lives. Do you know how crushed I was when I thought that you were dead? The guilt has been with me every day since you've been gone. You know what? Sometimes the guilt overpowered me and before I knew it I would find myself standing on the very edge of the chasm, looking down at the water, wondering whether it would hurt if I killed myself. You were the love of my life and the thought that I had lost you forever, ruined me."

"I-I, love of your life?" I stammered.

"Were. Not anymore."

I flinched at his cold words that were accompanied by an even colder glare.

Before either of us could mutter another world we were interrupted by the front door opening and the sound of Christina's voice filled the air.

"Hey babe, do you want to go for Italian or Chinese for breakfast?"

Her smile immediately faded when her eyes landed on me.

Tobias stood up and gave her a quick kiss, which I forced myself to look away from.

"Italian sounds good to me, Tris was just leaving."

I was about to argue but I realised that it would be better for everyone if I just left.

"Yeah, I was. Bye Tobias, bye Christina."

Christina muttered a quick goodbye.

Before I left the apartment, Tobias and my eyes connected for one brief second before he let his gaze drop from me to Christina.

I ignore the tears in my eyes and the pang in my heart and leave, closing the door behind me.

I sighed as I looked at my watch. I had been waiting for twenty minutes outside of Tris' door.

I decide it's time to knock again, again I'm disappointed by the outcome.

What the hell is going on in there? How is she still asleep after the constant banging on her door?

After five minutes my legs give up and I slide onto the floor, my back leaning against her door.

Just as I was getting comfy, Tris appeared out of nowhere.

Why does that always happen? You sit down, get comfy, then the person decides to finally show up.

"Tris where have you been? I've been waiting for twenty – five minutes!"

"I was out," she replied shortly.

I rolled my eyes, "This is why you need a phone. Anyway, where were you?"

"O-Out," she stutters.

I eye her suspiciously.

"Where?" I push.

"Uhh Mollie's milkshakes."

"Nice try Tris, we don't have a 'Mollie's milkshakes' here."

She gulps. "You're a terrible liar. Where were you?" I ask again.

"I," she sighs, "I was at Tobias' apartment."

"Why were you there?"

"I was just talking to him," she begins.

I shake my head, "That's not a good idea."

"Why not?" she says frowning.

"Because you've been gone for three years. You appear out of the blue, you haven't talked to anyone except for me, Zeke and Peter. Tobias – your ex, happens to be in a relationship. Do you not see what's wrong with that?"

"There is nothing wrong. I was just talking."

"Yeah, I know but other people might get the wrong idea, by other people, I mean Christina, I mean you haven't even talked to her yet."

"Look I've been here for a day and I don't need you to accuse me of sabotaging their relationship."

"What?! I never said that!"

She rolls her eyes, "Whatever."

She then steps over me and unlocks the door to her apartment, before I can get up and go in she slams the door in my face.

I banged on the door, "I thought that I was going to take you job hunting today!"

Her reply was muffled, "I can go by myself just leave me alone!"

I sigh knowing that she was not going to open that door any time soon.

A few moments after the door closed, another one opens.

Peter pokes his head out. His dark hair sits shining and curly on the top of his head. Judging by the sour expression on his face, we had woken him up by fighting.

I grin sheepishly, "Sorry for waking you up?"

Peter rolls his eyes, "It's cool."

He opens his door and begins walking back into his dorm. I stand there for a few seconds not knowing what to do. He then turns back and says, "Aren't you going to come in? Either come in or leave, stop standing there with your mouth open like an idiot."

I roll my eyes, same old Peter. I walk into his dorm and close the door behind me.
