Chapter 3

I woke up late the next day... The sun was shinning through the tent, I felt sweaty and gross as the sun had made the inside of the tent humid... I guess I needed the extra sleep in, I was kind of sleep deprived.

I rolled over in my sleeping bag and checked the time on my phone it was 11am. I was the last one to get up.

Everyone else was sitting under the gazebo chilling, chatting and eating. Kai and Brooke were eating cookie dough over night oats, while Jade was eating a fruit salad made from fresh fruit.

I got up, went over to my suitcase and got out of my pyjamas, I put on some grey sweatpants and a white cropped shirt. I put my hair up in a messy bun and joined my friends outside.

"Oh look who's finally awake" Brooke laughs as she swallowed her spoonful of oats.

"Afternoon sleepyhead" Jade giggled.

"Oh shut up you two, you both would've been like me if you didn't sleep for 24 hours the night before" I  say as I sit down next to Kai and pick up some of the left over oats and fruit salad.

"Let's go into town and buy some ice and drinks, let's have a a little party amongst ourselves" Brooke suggested to the group while nudging Jade's arm.

"Alright, we'll need to go collect some fire wood so we can have a small fire" I mention to everyone as I stuff my face full of food.

"Alright then Jade and I will go into town and buy us some drinks and Brooke and Lily can stay here and go collect some wood for our camp fire" Kai said as he stood up to throw out his paper bowl.

After lunch Brooke gave Kai her car keys and Kai and Jade went off to go buy some drinks for tonight.

"Drive safe" Brooke and I say before the two drive off.

"Alright lets go find some fire wood" I pat Brooke on the shoulder and walk off into the tent to put my timberlands on.

Brooke and I walk through the forest near camp and collect some logs of wood and some sticks.

I keep looking around as I hear twigs snapping every so often.

It's probably just Brooke trying to keep near me so we don't get lost, I thought as I brush the noises off.

After awhile of wood collecting and walking back and forth from the camp to the forest we make our final trip back to the camp site.

We make a small fire pit and set most of the logs aside for future use.

"Of course we get the hard job haha" Brooke hands me some water.

"We always do" I take a big sip.

"We should have just taken your car and loaded the back seat up with wood" Brooke giggles.

"I don't want any spiders or wood chips in my clean car, how dare you come up with that idea" I lightly laugh showing that I was joking.

We sat in peaceful silence rehydrating ourselves while waiting for Jade and Kai to come back from town.

"Hey look, is that another camp site over there?" I ask Brooke pointing down the bank about 2 km up stream from our camp.

"I think it is, it's good to know we're not totally alone" She smiles.

"That's true" a big feeling of relief washes over me.

"Oh finally dumb and dumber are back" I get up and walk over towards the car as I hear it approaching the camp site.

Kai and Jade hop out of the car and are carrying multiple different alcoholic drinks for tonight's party.

"Guys guess what... we bought some uno cards so we can play drunk uno" Jade pulls out some newly bought uno cards.

"Drunk uno??" I ask confused on how that is supposed to work.

"Yes drunk uno, you do 2 shots if you get a +2 and you do 3 shots if you get a +4, but if you get skipped or it is reversed when you are supposed to play next you do 1 shot" Jade explains the rules to us in detail making sure that she hasn't missed anything.

"We are going to get absolutely smashed" I say fake shocked.

"Well... that's kind of the whole point" Jade smiles.

I check the time and it is now 6 pm and the sun is setting.

"Let me start the fire now so we don't have to do it while drunk, or else that will be a disaster" I walk over to the fire wood Brooke and I collected and set up a spot to start up a fire.

"Let's get this game started" Jade exclaimed as she shuffled and dealt out the cards and fills up the shot glasses.

We play endless rounds of uno until all of us are drunk.

Jade ends up the most sober amongst us but definitely still drunk, she also won the most rounds. We drag our chairs near the fire I started earlier and we sit and talk about random subjects to fill in time.

"Omg!!...remember that time...when- when it was Brooke's 18th and Kai.... and- and Lily were dancing together and Kai dropped Lily on- on her head and then just walked off like nothing happened!!!" Jade could barely say her sentence as she was laughing so hard.

"And!! And!! And!! Lily just laid on the floor laughing so hard she ended up having tears in her eyes!!! We didn't know if she was crying in pain or laugher!!" Brooke exclaimed loudly before bursting out laughing.

Kai and I couldn't say anything to contribute to the conversation as we were reliving the events of the party while laughing so hard, Kai ended up wheezing  causing Brooke to laugh even more and I ended up having stomach pains.

We laughed so hard until we all fell oddly silent.

The tension started to rise between the four of us, as we all sat in silence listening to the fire burn.

"Is it just me or does it feel... slightly uncomfortable.." Kai starts to shift slightly in his camping chair.

"It kind of feels as if... someone is watching us."  Brooke states.

"That's impossible, the only other people that are relatively near us are those people from the camp down the bank and those back up in the cabins" I remind everyone.

"Hmmm you're right... I'm probably just overthinking... " She scratches the back of her neck unable to sit still.

The wind begins to pick up slightly becoming colder and giving off a more eerie vibe than it did before. The sound of the trees become louder as they sway in the wind, the fire started flickering as if it was about to go completely out.

"I think the fire needs another log" I say as I pick up a log and walk over to the fire.

As I'm about to put the log on the fire the fire stop flickering and looks perfectly fine.

"Oh that's odd... I could've sworn that it was just about to go out a second ago" I put the log down in front of me.

I look up over to Brooke, she seems spooked, her face looks as pale as a ghost or as if she's seen a dead body.

"Hey you okay?" I ask her as squat down to look her in the eyes.

"Hmm... o-oh yeah... yeah I'm fine, don't worry" her voice sounding shaky.

"Maybe you should go to bed?" I say to her as I place my hand on her knee.

"Maybe you're right... goodnight guys, I'll see you all in the morning".

"Me too" Jade says shortly after Brooke as she follows Brooke into the tent.

"I'm going to head in as well, you coming?" Kai nudges me.

"I'll head in soon let me burn out the fire a bit, I don't want it going out of control because we left it unattended.

I sit and watch the crackling fire for a bit longer taking in the peace and quiet when I hear a twig snap, I look over in the direction of the sound... but... nothing...
