"He choked." Goyle looked annoyed.

My friends and I were seated along with the other first years waiting to be sorted in two lines in the middle of the Great Hall. Mia and I sat next to each other, then Blaise and Theo, Crabbe and Goyle, and Draco seated next to a boy named Seamus.

The Rosier twins had separated themselves from us as soon as we arrived. I supposed we hadn't talked to them much anyways. They seemed to be friendly with Pansy, who I remember Draco said was considered a middle class Slytherin, as there were some discrepancies in her bloodline. Several, actually. She seemed desperate to worm her way in to the elite, even going as far as trying to put a spell on Draco. Absolutely no class at all.

I returned my attention to Goyle.

"What do you mean he choked?"

"I mean, Potter is out. He's already made nice with a Weasley, who Draco just had to insult."

I shrugged. "As long as he has friends..."
"
Why do we care if he has friends?" Draco interjected. "We were supposed to be his friends."

"Right," I cursed myself for my slip up. "I just mean at least we know he isn't a loner. We still have a chance."

Mia rolled her eyes. "If he's become friends with a Weasley, he'll want nothing to do with us."

I searched my mind for a connection with the name Weasley. "Weasley, as in Molly Prewett-Weasley?"

Blaise nodded, looking disgusted. "Inbreds, the whole lot if you ask me."

The Prewetts were a prominent enough pure blood family. But Molly had married a muggle lover with a tainted

bloodline, which sent ripples throughout the pure blood community. I could point out all of them now, just by their hair.

"Draco Malfoy!"
Draco strode up to the stool with confidence, the rest of us smiling reassuringly. While other kids may have been nervous, me and my friends know where we wanted to end up, and as far as we were concerned, that's all that mattered.

"Gregory Goyle!"
"Vincent Crabbe!"
"Mia Fawley!"
"Theodore Nott!"
"Blaise Zabini!"

All met with the same response.

"Slytherin!"

And then it was my turn.

"Isabella Jacoby!"
I sat on the stool. The moment the hat touched my head, I heard a voice.

"Jacoby, hmmm? Are we sure about that?" A pause. "I see. Well, I must admit, your family tree is a bit more complicated than I care to explain. But a Greengrass for a mother and a Shacklebolt for a father. That is quite the combination. And I see you value self preservation very deeply. A strong will to prove yourself. Better be...."

"Slytherin!"

"What do you know about Daphne Greengrass?"

After my conversation with the Sorting Hat, Daphne's name was called out. I couldn't help but notice her last name was the same as the one that the Sorting Hat mentioned my mother had.

Draco shrugged. "Not much. Her family has kept to themselves ever since her younger sister died. Blood curse. They believe someone in our circle was responsible. One of our ancestors, that is. So they dont associate with us anymore. I can't really blame them."

I looked across the room. She was blonde, with bright green eyes. Looked nothing like me, that much is for sure. I wasn't really sure of my ethnicity, but I certainly wasn't white, that much was for sure. Sometimes, it bothered me that I didn't know. Now, I was annoyed because my dominant traits prevented me from seeing any resemblance to Daphne, who might be... something to me. "Did her mum have any siblings?"

Draco looked at me inquisitively. "Hell if I know. Why do you care?"

I shook my head.

"Just curious."

After the feast we were lead back to our dormitories. Slytherin's was completely underwater, which I think is brilliant. Theo, on the other hand, not so much.
"Do you think those windows would ever crack?"

"It's a magic school, Theo, I assure you, they won't."

While Theo had appeared extremely confident when I first met him, he had become a bit timid at Hogwarts. I was sure it would wear off in time, especially once we got into classes and he would be able to learn about all of his contraptions that he was obsessed with.

My room had grey stone walls and a large window that filtered in sea green light from the lens of the ocean. Two beds were on either side of the room, with emerald green velvet canopy drapes. A small three steps led up to the beds, which ran all around the room in a U shape, with two couches facing each other in the middle.

Mia and I were the first to arrive, which meant we were able to grab beds right next to each other.

"This is so exciting!" Mia squealed.
"Yeah, but I wish we had more girl friends. I mean, the boys have two dormitories all to themselves, but we have to share with two strangers."
"Oh, we'll be okay. They won't be strangers once we're through with them! Besides as long as we don't end up with-

The door swung open hard, a mousy, angry looking girl standing behind it.

"...Pansy.''

She eyed us, and then dumped her trunk on the bed across from Mia. None of us said anything. The silence was broken by the fourth and final girl's arrival. And of course, with my luck, it was-

"Daphne Greengrass, pleasure to meet you!"

I smiled and Mia nudged me. "She's all right. We should make nice with her."

I nodded. I honestly felt as if my tongue was in knots.

Daphne put her trunk on the bed across from mine and glanced at Pansy, who scowled at her. She flinched a bit and decided to make her way over to us.

Mia introduced herself first. "I'm Mia Fawley!"

Daphne smiled and turned to me. As soon as she did, her smile turned into a look of shock. Her hand grazed my face before she clapped it over her mouth. Tears welled up in her eyes.

"...Isabella?"
