I woke up to the sound of light conversation downstairs. At the foot of my bed, someone had placed my broom next to a neatly folded sweater and black jeans, along with a pair of leather gloves and a note.
See you at ten. -Caleb
The grandfather clock in the hallway told me it was 9:30. Literally told me. It spoke. I got dressed and headed downstairs, only to find none other than Draco Malfoy sitting at the counter, eating a piece of toast and chatting with Pricilla-I mean, my mum. I called her mum for the first time last night and she cried. I thought I'd done something wrong, but she assured me that she didn't want me to call her anything else. Draco turned around and smiled. "Look who finally woke up," he said, raising his eyebrows. Him and my mother shared a smile. "We've been waiting for ages."
I tilted my head, confused. "You have?"
"No, I just got here." I rolled my eyes.
"But seriously, you've got to learn to wake up earlier. Breakfast at Hogwarts is at seven, and let me tell you, you ought to be down at six thirty since we're gonna be sitting at the same table as Crabbe and Goyle."
Draco told me a bit about his friends yesterday, and both Crabbe and Goyle did send me personal letters along with their family gifts, which was sweet, even though there were more spelling errors than actual words.
"Speaking of, everyone is coming over for dinner." Draco took a sip of orange juice before asking my mother, "who is everyone, exactly?"
Mum slid a plate full of food in front of me and looked at me pointedly. I knew she wouldn't let me leave without finishing it. Then she turned to Draco, saying, "Well, you of course, the Crabbes, the Goyles, the Zabinis, the Fawleys, the Flints, the Notts, and the Rosiers." Draco seemed very relieved at this, and I wasn't sure why. Seeing my confusion, he explained, "Sometimes, I attract unwanted attention from girls of certain lesser families." Mum laughed at this. "Don't worry, dear. The Parkinsons are no longer invited to any sort of gathering following your love potion punch fiasco last year." Draco's ears turned red. My mother looked over at me, amused by his shyness, and the said, "Now finish your toast, dear, and then you can go meet your brother outside. He's been out there all morning devising a training regimen. I would be very nervous if I were you two." Draco and I looked at each other. We hadnt exactly considered the fact that Caleb might be a brutal Quidditch coach. But now that we had, there was no doubt in our minds that he absolutely would be.
