Everyone was seated when we arrived in the formal dining room. Lucius tapped Draco's leg with his cane and nodded to me. Draco rushed over to pull out my chair for me before taking his seat next to me. He looked back at his father who nodded proudly. Neither of them noticed Caleb and Jason rolling their eyes across the table. I kicked Caleb's leg to get him to stop. He looked at me teasingly and I shook my head. At the head of the table, Lucius looked uncomfortable. I assumed it was due to the nature of the topic of the conversation he was going to facilitate.
"I was good friends with your parents, Isabella. All the way through my years at Hogwarts, and beyond. It is my hope that you and Draco will find others who will be able to defend our presence in the wizarding community."
Draco and I looked at each other and nodded. We knew his father's tone of voice meant establishing a close circle of friends wasn't just a hope. It was an expectation. One that seemed easy to fulfill, considering how eager everyone seemed to be in my good graces. As if he read my mind, Lucius said, "Don't be fooled. Not everyone who wants to know you has your best interest at heart. In fact, most people won't. People like these are the reason your parents were ripped away from you, my dear."
At this, my heart jumped. I was closer than ever at discovering what happened to my parents.
"Dear, the system failed you. When you and Draco were infants, we were supporting a powerful wizard who was seeking restoration in our world. While I can admit he did so rather forcefully, I fully believe his means to be necessary."
He sighed, rubbing his temple.
"The Ministry, of course, was actively working against him. Following the deaths of two wizards, they jumped at the chance to send your parents to Azkaban, even though their involvement was minimal."
My ears buzzed. I had read about Azkaban in one of the books I had read the night before. Even though my parents weren't confirmed to be dead, I knew they were as good as.
"I was supposed to be your godfather. You were meant to come be with us. We had a room set up for you and everything. We still do."
Draco's eyes go wide. "The purple room was for her?"
"Yes, son. The purple room is hers."
Draco looked a little angry, almost like a toddler whose mum said he couldn't have a sweet.
"Well, then why did she get stuck with those mud bloods all those years? When she could have had us?"
I had to agree with Draco. I had someone who wanted me, and yet, I had spent the last 11 years of my life completely alone."The Ministry wouldn't allow it," Lucius had his fist clenched, hard enough for his rings to dig in to his fingers. "My connection with the Dark Lord allowed for the Ministry to deem me unfit to raise you, as well as anyone else within our circle. No family in the wizarding world outside of it wanted to take you." He chuckled and shook his head.
"Even as an infant, your reputation proceeded you. So they dumped you into the muggle system." His jaw clenched. "Harry Potter, the son of the wizards who were killed the night your parents got arrested, had no such fate." Draco and I both were practically lying on the table now, hanging on to Lucius's every word."The boy who lived got nothing short of a parade to a relatives house. You were discarded into a house of mud bloods."
