Tanu was running errands when he jumped into his truck. His cell phone was ringing and absently answered it. He immediately swore under his breath and regretted it immediately because it was his current girlfriend. Names never mattered to him. The last few years, his choices in girls had been a blur of one dead-end toxic relationship to the next. He just needed them for security and affection. Otherwise, there was no love or passion involved besides the occasional tryst here and there. Tanu knew no other way due to his lack of experience and age and he was willing to take his time since he wasn't willing to learn anyway.
"Do you wanna break up with me?" she asked angrily point blank without a simple greeting.
He scoffed indignantly, but had no answer to give her since he wasn't very good with confrontation. He never left a text on read and even went the extra mile by responding to all his 'relationships' with certain enthusiasm at times. To Tanu, he was the ideal boyfriend. Boy was he wrong according to the Cosmos.
"What are you talking about? I've been busy," he muttered while glancing at his watch. He turned on the ignition and pulled out of his driveway while listening with slight impatience, becoming vastly aware of his irritation with her nasally voice.
"You have been avoiding me for the last week and you were supposed to register for classes. Are you coming back or not?" she asked angrily.
A queasiness hit his stomach that instant and realized he forgot to tell her he wasn't going back and was already being scouted for other universities. The thought totally slipped his mind and suddenly wanted to hang up in that moment.
"Psh. It's not something I wanna talk about right now, babe--"
"Don't babe me! We had a plan, remember? You said we were gonna change the world and you got me with your hair brained ideas of being something different!" she snapped.
"Oh my God. Is this what this is all about? How about what I want, huh? YOU want me to be something different. I didn't sign up for all of that. To work for your family and be their fucking 'garut'," he argued in a calm manner as was custom with his demeanor. He was losing it unbeknownst to her because his temples were pounding by then.
"'Garut'? What is that? And I'd watch that mouth if I were you. See? Every time you go home you turn into a classless savage!" she yelled.
'Garut' was Hawaiian pidgin for slave and Tanu was highly aggravated that she didn't know that. He even hated how she would often correct his grammar because he had a local pidgin accent. Over the years, he grew accustomed in trying to conceal it but it wasn't working for him because she made him feel inferior like his other mainland girlfriends. He no longer recognized himself anymore and it was becoming apparent to his own family.
He sighed out in frustration and cursed himself silently for not having enough gall to end it with this current girlfriend. But she was highly connected and would dramatically help him with his football career. Just when he was going to acquiesce to her as usual, a voice entered his mind and he grew distracted between the constant drone of his girlfriend's voice and another woman's voice all of a sudden.
Woman's voice: ...I dunno. I guess I should go with Priest. Is that a good name?
Little girl's voice: Tee! Hee! I like that, mommy! Priest sounds good. And ooh! How about Saint for the Samoan guy?
Tanu: What the fuck? Who is this?
"Tanu?...Tanu? Are you listening to me or are you phasing out like you always do when you don't want to hear me?" asked his girlfriend with impatience in her voice.
"Uh...hold up. I'm turning down the radio, okay? One sec," he replied in confusion.
As soon as he turned off the radio, he sighed in relief after the voices subsided. He quickly considered seeing a doctor and suddenly assumed he might have schizophrenia until her voice cut into his thoughts.
