"I'm coming Tomas," I grunted in frustration. So far I've only had two hours of sleep this week. It's been roughly a year since Mary and my mother's death and yet the memory still feels fresh, much like an old wound has reopened. When I got to the cradle, I picked Thomas up gingerly, afraid to lose him as well. "It's okay" I said, as I put him in the cradle outside to do some laundry, however he had other intentions and proceeded to crawl around. Afraid that he'd crawl to the woods, I picked him up quickly, put him back in the crib, and fastened him up. I proceeded over to the wash bin to start washing, it reminded me of fonder times with Mary and our mother. For some reason, mother loved the old fashioned life. We found an old town in Arizona and bought an old run down plantation home. We renovated it to its former glory which is a two story mahogany house with seven bedrooms, a parlor the color of magenta, the dining room is a gentle sea green with heavy grey velvet curtain and the basement which includes an unused kitchen in it.
As I started to wash the laundry, I heard Tomas wail, causing me to sprint over to the cradle to behold a dark, ferocious, black and magenta colored dragon. The dragon has wide jade green eyes that seem to follow every movement you make, scales that scintillate when the sun beams reflect upon them. The beast seemed to be fascinated with Thomas, since he wouldn't take his eyes off of him. Gently, the dragon leaned his monumental size head over Thomas and slipped something into his cradle. Frightened upon the encounter, I ran over and hit the dragon with a broom. It started to growl at me and then lunged; instinctively, I put my hands up thinking if I had a shield I would be safer. Wondering why I haven't been bitten yet, I looked up and saw a golden gleam around me that the dragon had run into it leaving me unscathed.
Quickly, I went over to my brother's side and picked him up, however when I did, all Thomas did was wail which led me to see that he was crying because the object he had been holding had fallen. I picked it up suspiciously, it had turned out to be a necklace that fits all ages. I knew that Mary had one when she was a couple of days old but mother had hidden it. I examined the necklace closely, noticing the shape of a dragon with Black Star Diopside as the main body of the dragon, obsidian as the wings, and finally a bright jade stone for the eye. Attached to the necklace; was a note:
"Caroline,
I am Lucifer, the fallen angel also Thomas' father and therefore I have every right to be concerned about his well being especially since I fear that it isn't safe where you are currently. In the envelope provided is where your mother hid some of your belongings. I highly advise you to go find them then leave immediately. I fear something or someone is hunting you. This dragon is one of my prized possessions, as well as my sacred animal, and has been assigned to protect my son. Hurry, they're coming!
-Thomas' father"
I stood there shocked by what I just read. Who is coming? Why are we in danger? Why a dragon? How is Lucifer my brother's father? A million questions bombarded my head without rest. I looked in the cradle to see there was indeed an envelope addressed to my name. I put Thomas on the ground while I reached for the envelope and opened it. On the thin sheet of paper, it stated:
"Your belongings are in the night drawer. You must go to Heaven Academy in Virginia."
I grabbed Thomas from the ground and made a dash for the door starting to pack up mine and Thomas' clothes in a bag. I made sure I grabbed my bonnet, fold-able hoop, corset and all of my garden and ball gowns. For Thomas, I packed his favorite blanket, a red and white quilt that has teddy bears in the corners and a rocking horse in the center which was made by our mother in her second term, and his washable diapers as well as Mary's old straw doll. On my way out the door, I grabbed the necklace my mother kept from me which was in the form of a cross with an apatite gem in the very center, surrounding it with citrine gems. Once I obtained my necklace, I grabbed Mary's pink zircon and rubies in the shape of a heart. However, unlike mine and Thomas' necklaces that gleam like a star, Mary's was hazy. I hitched everything we needed onto the stomach of the dragon as well as Thomas' basket on the back. Once that task was complete, I got on the dragon with Thomas and made sure he was fastened up as sturdy as possible however one abnormal change in the environment caused me to steal a glance at the woods. In the dark, forsaken distance, I noticed a human like structure standing at the mouth of the woods and chanting.
Suddenly, the air around me was starting to be circumcised, the wind howling as it picked up speed uprooting trees, a flash of lightning arched its way from the sky hitting the ground leaving a meteorite sized hole. From that smoldering hole came a giant Komodo Dragon, which started to bound towards us at an incredible pace. I ordered the dragon to get us in the air as fast as possible and with a shake of his defiant, proud, scaly head we went skywards toward the atmosphere.
Once in the air, we were so close to the thin, white substance that when the cloud touched Thomas' petite nose, he giggled. Although I found his giggle angelic, I could not dwell on it due to the fact that I was focusing on steering a mountainous dragon towards Virginia.
After a few hours passed, I noticed the sun was starting to set and I started surveying the ground due to the fact that we needed to find an isolated area big enough for a dragon so we can all rest. I noticed a small cave with a river on the bottom of the ravine with a sign that says "The Grand Canyon".
Understanding that Thomas was asleep, the dragon landed lightly careful not to stir the child from his slumber. After we landed, I carefully got Thomas off the back of the dragon, got out his favorite blanket and gently wrapped him up. After assuring myself that Thomas was taken care of, I took out mother's old mother goose quilts and curled up, while the ferocious beast blocked out the moonlight.
"You should have a name," I whispered, "what about Larry?"
"Rick......" My little brother said in a hushed tone talking in his sleep. The dragon seemed to raise his head high as if that's his name.
"Rick will be your new name then." I said before gently fell into a depressing sleep.
