When we emerge into the main house, there's already total chaos. People are running into each other as they all make for the main door and I quickly press myself against a nearby wall to avoid getting run over. I can feel Hero's presence right next to me as I look around, in hopes to catch a glimpse of my friends.
"Priya?! Jesse?!" I shout, hoping they would still be nearby but even after calling for them again, there's no sign. "Where'd they go? My first time going out and I'm about to get arrested? My dad is going to kill me!2 I say, more to myself, reaching for my phone in my pocket to call Priya but a hand grabs my wrist and I look up to see Hero staring at me, intensely.
"I won't let that happen. Come on. I'll get you out of here." I just stare at him for a moment before I nod and start for the front door with everyone else but Hero's grip stops me and I whirl around looking up at him.
"Thats where the cops will corner everyone." He says before looking around, his eyebrows shooting up as he sees something. "This way, and stay close!" He leads me against the flow of the other party-goers and when his grip on my wrist loosens I quickly intertwine our fingers so we won't get separated. He glances at me for a second, a small smile on his lips. Hero slams open a side door, pulling me with him. "My cars just through here!" He whisper-shouts and we dash across the house's backyard, stopping in front of the property's imposing, wrought-in fence. I stop, looking at Hero with wide eyes but before I could say anything, he grabs my hips and easily lifts me, vaulting me up over the fence. He then leaps up and grabs the top rails, muscles rippling as he lifts himself up and over, landing easily next to me.
"We're almost there. Stay low!" From a distance, I see a pair of police cruisers skid to a stop outside the front entrance, cornering my classmates as they flee. "You there! Stop!" One of them shouts and I could just about make out Sean, raising his hands over his head.
"Do you even know who I am?" He shrieks and I freeze when one of the officers turns her head in our direction, pointing at us.
"Hey! These two are getting away outback! Go cut em off!" The female officer shouts and me and Hero start running past the hedges until I spot his car, the yellow almost glowing in the dark. Hero rips the driver door open, hurling himself in the seat behind the wheel as I clamber in the passenger seat, my heart pounding.
"Buckle up!" Hero demands before throwing the stick into gear and hitting the gas. The car rockets forwards, pushing me into the seat as we blast onto the road just before a squad car can block our escape.
"Pull over now!" I look in the side view mirror as the voice booms through their speaker and I could swear, my heart was about to explode.
"They're right behind us! Maybe we should stop!" I shout and Hero gives me a look before focusing back on the road, shaking his head.
"I promised you I wouldn't let them catch you, and I meant it." He says slowly and I watch him switch on a small device on his dash, voices coming from the radio filling the car.
"Hot damn, that's kids fast! He's already going northbound on McLaughlin!" My eyes widen in realization and I look over at Hero, who had his signature smirk on his face.
"Is that a police scanner?" I ask, even though I already know the answer and he shrugs, eyes focused on the road as we speed down the street. "It does come in handy sometimes."
"Copy. Car 84, intercept at Palms! We need backup!" The same voice says over the scanner and as we reach Palms Boulevard Hero swerves, dodging the incoming squad car, and races past them the other way. I look at him, incredulously, as he lets out a carefree laugh.
