Soon, Priya and I are in her family room, hunting through Netflix for movies. I'm almost scared to see anything, too afraid that she might change her mind again and leave me to spent the evening by myself.
"So which scary move will it be?" Priya speaks up and I feel a smile forming on my lips as relief washes over me, making me relax a little bit as we sit next to each other on her couch.
"Didn't you have a list somewhere that we were working through?" I ask and Priya raises an eyebrow at me, pointing a finger at me.
"Um, that was you who always meticulously kept a ranked list of movies." She points out and I let out a little laugh, nodding my head.
"Okay, that... does sound more like me." I admit and she chuckles as she turns back towards the TV, scrolling through the collection. A funny thought suddenly crosses my mind and I grin. "Priya, do you remember that one sleepover when we convinced my dad to let us paint his nails?" I ask and Priya whips her head towards me, looking at me with wide eyes.
"Ohmygod, yes! He was so worried he was going to accidentally smudge the finish." She exclaims. "Even after we told him they were dry." The two of us laugh at the memory, but I stop as my mind wanders to what my dad might be doing right now. Priya puts a comforting hand on my arm as if reading my thoughts. "I'm sure you'll patch things up with him soon, Jo." She says and I sigh.
"I hope so..." I say quietly, pressing my lips together as silence settles over us for a moment. Priya gives me a long sideglance.
"So.. are you ever gonna tell me what happened?" She says after a while and I look down, my fingers playing with the blanket on my lap.
"It's... a long story."
"We've got all night." Priya says and I look at her, smiling weakly before running a hand through my hair and turning my body so I could face Priya better.
"Well, I had that big fight with my dad, so I've been staying with Hero for the past few days. Until I found out he was using me from the moment we met." I say and even saying it out loud brought back the memory of the way Hero was looking at me when I found out. I shake my head a bit, trying to get rid of the image.
"What?" Priya exclaims and I sigh before I recap everything that's happened with Hero as best as I could.
"Basically, his boss told him to get close to me because my dad's a cop. That's the only reason Hero ever talked to me. I felt so close to him, to them all.. and it was all a lie." I say, already feeling the burn behind my eyes again. To my surpise, Priya wraps an arm around me and gives me a long hug.
"Jo, I'm so sorry. That's awful. But..." She starts as we pull away, looking at me a little bit uncertain. "...are you sure all of it's true?"
"What do you mean?" I frown at her and she shrugs.
"Well, it's just that... I know I don't know Hero very well, but from what I saw, his feelings for you seemed genuine. I don't think he was pretending to care about you. Maybe at the very beginning, but definitely not the whole time." She says and Hero's exact same words echo in my mind.
"Even if he did start to actually care for me, he lied! And I had to learn the truth from Jax." I exclaim, the torn feeling washing back over me.
"I'm not saying he doesn't owe you one whopper of an apology. I just... I think you should believe him when he does apologize." Priya says and I sigh, looking away from her a moment. A huge part of me just wants to go back to him, tell him I'll forgive him but the other is yelling that he doesn't deserve it and that I would just feel bad about myself if I did.
