After school, me and Priya head to my house. Priya flops down on my bed dreamily with a sigh before propping herself up with her elbows and looking at me, her feet dangling from the edge.
"So, let's see. What are you wearing tonight?" She asks, tilting her head to the side and I shrug, gesturing to myself.
„Um, this?" I ask and my best friend raises an eyebrow at me, looking at me as if I'm crazy.
„That?"
„What's wrong with this?" I counter, tugging at the rim of my sweater.
„You've been wearing that Jennings sweater since you decided to go there a million years ago! This is your first high school party. You deserve a makeover." Priya exclaims, jumping up off the bed and making her way to my closet. I watch her with a sigh, shaking my head.
"I don't know.." I say quietly.
„Please! Do it for me... More importantly, do it for you. Let yourself stand out for once. Come on!" Priya pleads, gesturing for me to walk over to her. I do so, looking at her with a small smile.
"You know what, you're right. But you gotta help me." I give in and Priya excitedly claps her hand together. "Let's see what you've got in your closet."
10 minutes and a mess on my bed later, I was standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom, applying another layer of mascara. Priya had practically begged me to let her do my makeup but I declined. Eyeshadow and lipstick might look good on her but I wasn't feeling completely comfortable yet. Baby steps. After another quick glance in the mirror, I turn to leave and Priya looks up from her phone when I enter with a big smile. I do a little silly twirl for her and she claps excitedly.
„Well? What do you think? Is it too much?" I ask her, looking down at my outfit. I went with a white blouse, tucked in a red skirt with a little bow at the top. It wasn't anything too fancy, since I didn't own anything like that anyway but it was different from my usual attire.
„You look so good! Hero won't know what hit him!" I roll my eyes at her comment but notice the slight flip of my heart as I thought about Hero. I quickly shake it off. "But it's not about what he thinks, or what I think. It's what you think." Priya continues and I walk over to the mirror, tugging on my skirt to pull it down a bit.
„I think... I think I love it." I say, turning around to my best friend who jumps off the bed and wraps an around me. "Then, let's go!"
We enter the living room to see my dad is setting up a pile of board games on the coffee table. He doesn't look up when we enter, running a hand through his hair as he looks at the games in front of him.
„So, I think we've got time for one round of Last Days of a Star and the best of three in Colony before I have to head into the office." He glances up, clearly surprised that I was dressed up and that Priya was with me.
„Oh! Hi, Priya. Josephine.. you look very nice. Are you two going somewhere?" He asks, tilting his head to the side as he placed his hand on his hips.
„Oh, Dad, I forgot to tell you... Priya and I made plans." I admit, feeling kind of bad seeing how he has prepared everything for our usual birthday nights. With everything happening today I completely forgot all about it.
„Plans? What kind of plans?" Priya probably didn't notice but I could tell the smile he gave us didn't reach his eyes and there was a hint of disappointment in his voice, no matter how hard he tried to hide it.
