Chapter 9 - Taking You There

josephine's pov

My blood freezes as everyone stares at me. I swallow hard, wanting to say something, anything, but no words come out. My eyes find Hero's, who's looking at me, his brow furrowed.

"Your dad's a cop? Thats how you knew?" He asks, and I hestitant but nod. He looks away from me, back to the scrap of paper still in his hand, thinking.

"Not just any cop, either. He's leading the hunt for us." Jenny speaks up, anger clear in her voice as she glares at me with dark eyes.

"So.. how bad is this?" Levi asks and Jenny huffs, crossing her arms.

"We let the kid of the guy trying to throw us behind fucking bars spend a whole night hanging out here! I'd say pretty fucking bad!" She exclaims and I take a step forward, shaking my head.

 "Jenny, I'm not gonna tell anybody-" I start. I want them to understand that I would never do anything to help getting them caught.

"Sorry, but I'm not willing to bet my freedom on somebody's word. Not again." She cuts me off, before looking around, at each member of the crew before her eyes settle on Tanaka, who was still extremely quiet. "We've gotta split. Each take our share, and just go our own way."

"Jen, Josephine saved us back there! You really think she'd do that if she were just gonna fuck us over?" Relief washes over me as Hero speaks up. "Tanaka, come on! You know it's true." As everyone looks at Tanaka, he's looking down, arms crossed as he seems to think things over. 

"..Perhaps." He says, slowly and I sigh.

"Look.. You hid stuff from me too. None of you were willing to admit to me what was happening when I came here. I figured it out on my own." I speak up and Jenny shoots me a death glare while Levi and Emilia share a look.

"Josephine's right. We weren't straight up with her. You all need to back off. She could've turned us in but she didn't." Hero says, sounding almost desperate in his try to defend for me.

"Who's to say she still won't? If it comes down to her or us? She's not dumb." Jenny says and I match her glare.

"Why don't you give me a chance, Jenny? Have I given you any reason to believe otherwise?" I say and she just looks at me, not saying anything. It's quiet for a long moment before Emilia sighs.

"Josephine.. I like you, I do. But even if you don't willingly give us up, you could till lead your father here by accident." She says. I frown, trying to think of something to ensure them that won't happen but I know she's right. From behind her someone starts chuckling. When the person steps forward, I see it's Jax, an amused look on his face.

"How do you know she hasn't already?" He asks. 

"You seem to be enjoying this, son." Tanaka speaks up, a hint of a warning in his tone.

"Just admiring the machine-like efficiency of this crew you put together, Pops. Real stellar. I can see why you don't want me here mucking it up." Jax says and Hero turns towards him, a scowl on his face. 

"This ain't about you, Jax." He says and Jax lifts his eyebrows at him, pointing a finger in Hero's chest.

"And it's not about you either. You've been here, what? A year? Less?" He says and Hero slaps his hand away.

"Get your fucking hands off me." He says and I look around at the others, seeing them all just watch them, no one making a move to get between the two.

"This isn't your crew, Hero. Josephine isn't risking everything your family built for generations. So you don't get a say in this because you have a fucking crush." As soon as the words leave Jax's mouth, Hero takes a swing at him, connecting his fist with his jaw. Jax groans in pain, clearly not expecting that, but he doesn't waste any time grappling him. Together, they wrestle to the floor.
