Just a disclaimer, all these characters and ideas belong to James Dashner. I only own Maya!

After that, I was officially accepted as a Glader. Other than being checked out twenty times a day, I felt completely comfortable.

The next month was filled with laughs, constantly joking around with the boys. Chuck and I got closer as I told him a story every night and taught him how to use a spear. They were all too heavy for him so eventually I had to teach him about knives.

Gally and I actually began to work with each other as we came up with better ideas to make weapons. He came up with a bow and arrow for me to use and once we figured out how to make the arrows, it was only a matter of target practice.

Gally and I ran out of supplies faster than we usually did so we had to pick up a new job until supplies were delivered. I decided to tend to the crops and plant a few things to keep our food supply growing. The sun got hotter as the day kept going and eventually, most of the boys were working shirtless. A few of them kept looking at me as though I was supposed to be impressed with them but when Newt looked at me it was different.

To start, he was fully clothed and when his eyes fixed on mine, I saw pure admiration. I turned away, continuing to work but I couldn't help feeling all fuzzy inside. I did my best to swallow it as the day went on.

"Here."

I looked up and there was Newt, holding a cup towards me. I stood up and took it happily, drinking all the water in almost one gulp.

"Thanks." I smiled and handed it back.

He nodded and got back to work. I watched him as he walked and noticed a slight limp. Once the other boys went for their break, I took a chance to ask him about it.

"It's nothing." He shrugged it off.

"You sure?" I asked.

"Yeah I've had it forever." He handed me a basket full of carrots. "Give this to Fry will ya?"

I nodded and did what I was told, not wanting to get in the way. Once I returned, Newt had finished the rest so we took the day off. I changed into less sweaty clothes and put my sweater on as the sun began to set.

Alby started up a little campfire and instead of fighting and going crazy, the boys just sat down and talked, hanging out. After awhile, I noticed Newt wasn't there. I told Chuck I would be right back and went straight for the hammocks, hoping Newt wasn't working on something important.

I leaned against the pillar gently, crossing my arms in front of my chest. He was laying in his hammock, twirling a knife in his hand.

"You know the campfire is over there." I said quietly, smirking slightly.

He gave me a warm smile and sat up. "And what's your excuse, tired of those Shanks already?"

I smiled and shook my head. "Well you're a Glader too so then I'd have to be tired of you also."

"Touche." Newt smiled and so did I.

It was quiet for a while, leaving an awkward silence between us.

"Do you wanna... take a walk maybe?" Newt asked.

"Sure." I replied quietly.

Newt got up and started leading me further from the campfire, towards the forest. We walked at a nice slow pace, side by side, not sure of what to say. So I decided to bring up his leg again.
