Just a disclaimer, all these characters and ideas belong to James Dashner. I only own Maya!
Nightfall came quickly, and about an hour after that, torches were lit as darkness began to set in. No one had come to see me all day and I was starting to get a bit antsy.
Where am I? What was the point of being in a cage, and now in a prison cell? What's happening? A million thoughts raced through my mind as time passed. None of this made sense and I just wanted answers.
A low rumbling kept me wide awake, spiking my curiosity and adding to the amount of questions I had. The sound of a creature screeching not too far away caused my heart to race but no one seemed to panic so I kept my cool.
"Hey." A familiar voice said, waking me from my thoughts.
Looking up, a scrawny boy about my age with blonde hair and dirty clothes was sitting just in front of my cell. He was holding a lantern and a plate.
"Are you hungry?" He asked, bending down.
I didn't say anything. I wasn't sure if I could trust him or the food. Then again, he was the only one to visit me all day. He opened the cage door and got in with me, placing the food a little out of my reach.
I was starving, but I didn't make a move to take it.
His voice sounded familiar. There was an accent there but also I thought he was the one to scold Gally about not helping me up when I was in that cage. He squatted down to my level and looked me straight in the eye.
"Who are you?" He asked.
I shrugged.
"Do you know how to speak? Or are you just... shy?"
Again, I shrugged.
He nodded. "Well I don't really want to call you Greenie so when you remember your name, and you want to talk, call me. The name's Newt."
He held out his hand to shake but I didn't want to. He didn't seem to be moving until I shook it so I swallowed my pride and slowly shook. His fingers were calloused and rough against my skin but his little half smile was friendly. He let go first and pulled himself out of the pit, locking it behind him.
"Eat up, Greenie." He gave me a small nod and then left me alone.
As soon as I couldn't hear his footsteps anymore, I dove into the bread and water. It felt beautifully refreshing going down and I practically inhaled it all. My stomach was filled when I finished and for the rest of the night I sat in silence.

Morning came quickly and at dawn, a few of the boys were up and talking. A low rumble erupted like the ones from the night before but again, no one panicked.
Curiously, I sat up and looked through the bars, only to see Gally walking past and another boy coming towards me. He was short and fat but he had that familiar adorable child nature I couldn't quite place.
"Hi," He said cheerfully.
I gave him a soft smile and he handed me a few pieces of food. I took it hesitantly, and looked to see that it was bacon. I took small bites, wanting to preserve my two pieces.
"I'm Chuck." He said, sitting down outside the bars. "Do you know your name yet?"
I shook my head sadly and kept eating.
"Oh well that's okay. That happens to all of us." He shrugged.
"All of who?" My curiosity spoke before I could even catch the words coming out of my mouth.
