Dice felt his blood run cold as he looked at the two black dots on the dice. He...lost. He bet his soul. And he lost. He had never felt more fear. He, like any boy in his position, turned to his mother as the devil loomed behind her. "Mom..." He whispered.
Ruby felt a fire light inside her as she saw the same scared little boy before her as she did the day she found him in that dirty alley and she put on a stoned face and went to stand in front of him protectivly.
"If you want him boss...You're gonna have to kill me first." She said, her wings springing out of her back and curling around her protectivly.
The devil chuckled. "Oh you think you're going to stand a chance fighting me ruby?" He said, his eyes glowing.
"I don't have to. I just have to last long enough to give him a chance to run." She said shaking her head.
Dice grabbed her arm. "Mom don't! Don't do this! You'll get hurt!"
"Dice... as your mother I'm telling you to go. Now. Mr. Wheezy! Take my son out of here!" She called behind her and the large cigar man came up and picked up the boy who began kicking and trying to get back to his mother.
"Mom! Mom! Mama!" He yelled.
Ruby felt tears rolling down her face as she resisted the urge to run to her boy and instead she heard the phrase that echoed across the island every time a brawl would happen. "It's a great day for a battle! Whollop!" And the devil grew large and angry looking and she rushed in to try and swipe him with her wings,
The battle was short, so short in fact wheezy couldn't even get dice out the door before ruby was smacked so hard she was flung back against the wall and slid down and the devil laughed in victory as his companion laid there, broken bones, bleeding, and all. "Not so tough now are you ruby?" He asked as he shrank back to his normal size and he approached her, lifting her from the floor by her neck, her eyes still angry and glowing as he held up against the wall as she choked and gasped in his grip.
Dice's eyes widened and he leaned down and bit wheezy, making the man drop him and he rushed, "wait! Please! Let her go! Please let her go! Take my soul and let her go!" He pleaded and the devil turned and smiled widely, happy that he w ouldnt have to chase down the runty looking kid and he dropped ruby and turned to grab the dice by the neck and he kicked lightly in his grasp, fear setting back in as the devil turned to carry him off and ruby sat up slowly, dizzy and hurting and bleeding. "No... no! Devil! Boss! Satan wait!" She pleaded, trying to stand to follow as he kept walking away but she fell to her hands and knees, "l-LUCIFER!" She yelled.
He paused, mid step. He hadn't realized how much he missed hearing her say that name. He turned slowly as the dice struggled in his hand and he locked eyes with her and his heart panged with pain as he saw the pain and fear on her face. "Ruby?" He whispered.
"Lucifer..." She choked out. "Please... don't take my son from me. I can't take it. Let him go... take me. Take me instead. Just let him go... please Lucifer. I can't lose him like this." She pleaded, her voice breaking as she began to full on sob and break down.

Dice looked down at hi mother and he hated himself to his very core. This was all his fault. "Mama..." He whispered, trying not to choke in the devils grip.

The devil felt his cold heart break at the sight of his beloved broken like that and he looked between her and the dice in his grip. "What am I doing?" He muttered before dropping the die. "Go to your mother..." He told him and dice wasted no time and ruby gasped as she moved to pull dice to her, holding onto him as if she would die if he left her arms.
"I will not take his soul. He will work here instead. You're in charge of him... Mr. Wheezy. Take ruby and her son to her room to let her recover."
Mr wheezy was still holding his bleeding hand as he approached the scene and he nodded. "Yes boss." He said as he came over and picked up ruby gently, "come on ruby. You need to rest now. You took quite a beating there."
Ruby held back a whimper as she rested against her friend and slowly closed her eyes as he carried her off to her room, laying in her bed and placing a cool wet cloth on her head.
Dice stood in the door, watching carefully as he tried not to cry at the sight of his mother in such a state from trying to protect him. He never realized the lengths she would go to to protect him the woman just about killed herself fighting the fucking devil to save his rotten unworthy soul...

Wheezy knocked him out of his thoughts by taking his shoulder. "Hey kid. We need to have a chat." He said, giving him a rough shove out of the room and onto ruby's red velvet couch.
Dice glared up at the man. "What?"
The man folded his arms and looked down at the ballsy kid. "Listen and listen good. You have no idea... just what you witnessed do you?"
"I witness my mom nearly die at the hands of satan..."
He chuckled and shook his head, sitting on the table across from the kid.
"You ever hear of Saint Ruby. Lady of hearts? That's your mom. She's as old as Satan himself. S hes been alive longer than some countries have been around, longer than some religions, longer than anyone else on earth. Shes love many mortals but never one as much as she loves you... and you witnessed her offer up her immortal soul for the sake of yours."
Dice felt his blood run cold again and he leaned back against the couch and he looked down at his tattooed hands. "My mom is immortal..."
"And now you are too but not the same as her. You'll only be like this as long as you're useful to the devil so I suggest you listen when she starts teaching. You learn quick and you make damn sure that everything she's done for you doesn't go to waist just because you wanna get mouthy with the boss. Got it kid?"
Dice swallowed hard and nodded slowly.
"Good. Now I've gotta run things while your mom's out but I'll send someone to check on her in a couple hours. If she needs anything just come find me." He said standing from the table and heading for the door.
"Food in the fridge. Bathroom is down the hall. Guestroom to the left. Make yourself at home. That's what she would want." Wheezy said before walking out and leaving dice to his thoughts.
