"I think chocolate is better than that gum kind," Megan licked her chocolate ice cream cone as we walked down the sidewalk. I laughed at her comment.
"It's not gum. It's mint," I licked the drip of ice cream from the cone. The LA heat was beating down on us. "Are you excited for summer to start?" I looked down at her and wiggled my eyebrows up and down. "Only one more week," I smiled down at her. She dramatically sighed.
"I'm going to miss my friends," She drooped her head down and I had to hold in a laugh. "How am 'posed to see them if we are not at school?" She shrugged her shoulders and shook her head.
"You can still see them in the summer," I nudged her shoulder with my hand. "You can have more sleepovers when school gets out." She smiled at me. "Besides school is boring," I dramatically rolled my eyes.
We walked down the sidewalk. There were so many people outside right now. Every once in a while I pulled Megan closer to me as sketchy people passed. My car was currently getting fixed so Megan and I have just been walking around LA. Actually, we were almost near Beachwood.
"It's really hot out," Megan groaned and wiped the sweat off of her forehead. I began to get worried as she started sweating even more. Max one time got heatstroke so I've always been very careful about the heat.
"When we get to the cafe we can cool off in there," I started walking a little quicker as we got closer to Beachwood. We finally reached the doors and I pulled them open, pushing her inside.
"Hello, you two!" Margret's sweet voice spoke. "What brings you back?" She put her hands on her hips.
"Hey, can I just get two cups of ice water?" Megan sat down in her seat and leaned her head back. "It's super hot outside," I brushed through Megan's hair and started pulling it up. I pulled it into a high ponytail and secured it with an elastic. I braided the loose ponytail to ensure it would stay off of her neck. Margret put a cup of water in front of Megan and handed the other to me.
"Drink up kiddo," I pointed at the water and she immediately brought the cup to her lips. She gulped the water and took a break to breathe. We stayed in the cafe for about thirty minutes. "Do you want to go back to my house or walk around some more?" I asked Megan as we walked out of Beachwood.
We walked back towards my apartment. The sun had no mercy. Megan might have a nasty sunburn on her shoulder by the time we get home. I eventually picked her up because the heat was exhausting her. I told her she needed to drink more water when we got back to my apartment. I would never forgive myself if something bad happened to her under my watch. We finally got to the apartment and walked in. The lobby was hot, but we made it to my apartment as quickly as possible.
We walked in and I immediately grabbed a cup from my cabinets. I filled it with ice and then filled it with water. I tossed an ice cube on the floor for Bruce to lick. I handed Megan her cup and she started drinking it. I sat down next to her at the kitchen island.
"Your mom will be here in a few minutes," I took a sip of my water. Megan nodded and swung her feet on the chair.
"Is mommy friends with that man?" She turned towards me in her chair and furrowed her eyebrows. I was confused at first, but then I realized she meant Harry.
"No, I don't think she knows him," I shook my head.
"He's handsome," Megan's cheeks grew red and she tried to hide her smile. Someone had a little crush. I laughed.
"Yeah, he is huh?" I nodded and took another drink of my water. "He's very nice too," I looked at her and raised my eyebrows.
"He should be my new dad," I choked on my water. I wiped my chin and looked at her. I couldn't hold in my laugh.
"Megan, I don't think you know how that works, but-" She frowned and looked at the ground. "You know what," She looked up. "Nevermind," Is shrugged my shoulders and she smiled again. Sometimes kids having no filter was a blessing and a curse. I heard a knock at the door and then it slowly opened. Kay walked in still in her scrubs.
"Mommy!" Megan jumped down from her seat and ran to Kay. They hugged and Kay looked at me.
"Did you two have fun?" She smoothed Megan's hair back.
"Mommy, can Harry be my dad?" Kay's eyes went wide and she looked at me. I covered my mouth with my hand and closed my eyes.
"Who is Harry?" She looked at me with so much concern.
"He has long hair like me," Megan swayed back and forth on her feet. Kay calmed down and laughed.
"Did you show her One Direction?" She laughed and I raised my eyebrows.
"What's that?" Megan looked so confused. "Harry was in the car today," She was so casual about it. "Also Aunt Sadie got a new car," She casually took another sip of her water. Kay looked at me with confusion.
"I didn't get a new car, but" I bit my lip and looked at her. "I did use Harry's," I smiled awkwardly.
"Sweetie, go play on mommy's phone," Kay handed Megan her phone and Megan ran over to the couch. Kay walked over to me. "What is going on?" Her eyes were wide.
"Harry is a regular at Beachwood. My car wouldn't start so he offered to let me use his." I tried to be as normal as possible.
"Harry as in Harry Styles?" Her eyes were still open wide with shock. I nodded my head. Her eyes got even wider. She looked to her left and then back at me. "Does he smell good?" She squinted at me.
"I didn't sniff him," my eyes grew wide and I shook my head. Then I thought back and nodded my head. "I didn't sniff him, but his car smelled nice. He actually came into my apartment," I nodded and scratched the back of my head. "Megan fell asleep on the ride back from school so I carried her in here and he carried her booster seat," It felt so normal because I saw Harry as a friend. Kay's eyes were so wide. She nodded slowly and peaked over my shoulder.
"Come on Megan," Megan ran over to her. She waved goodbye and left my apartment. Before Kay shut the door she poked her head back in. "You are being way too normal about this." She squinted at me and pointed. She finally shut the door and I laughed to myself.
"This is far from normal," I laughed to myself again and moved my hair out of my face. I walked over to the couch and sat down. Bruce jumped up next to me. "He isn't normal," I shook my head. "Almost superhuman," I smiled as I pet Bruce.
