the night surf

"What's up main hoe?" Tate called, jumping down from the low roof on his house as I got out of my Jeep.

"What's up, man hoe" I replied, motioning to his board. He sighed, picking it up and putting it in the trunk.

"So, why are we going to a night surf? I thought you never wanted to go to one." He asked, grabbing a towel from a hook.

"Remember that guy from earlier today? He kind of invited me to the night surf that's going on tonight, and I said I'd go. To be honest, I didn't mean to, it kinda just happened." I replied, laughing at my own awkwardness. I looked back at Tate, who was wiggling his eyebrows.

"Oh shut up, I saw him once. Asshole knocked me off my board." I slammed the car door, igniting the engine before I pulled out of the driveway.

We only drove for a few minutes before arriving at the same beach from earlier. People crowded towards a stand where glowsticks were being handed out, and another crowd all went towards the beach. There was a large fire where people played guitars and made smores, and people waxing their boards before diving in. I got out of the car, pulling my board off of the roof, and opening the trunk.

I pulled off my sundress, revealing my white crochet bikini, and threw it in the trunk. Tate did the same, putting his muscle shirt in the trunk.

We jogged over to an empty spot and pulled out our own wax disks, taking time to smooth out the bottom of our surfboards, checking the fins before getting ready to go in. The hawaiian water was still lukewarm, not cold enough to need a wetsuit in. I still flinched as I got deeper, only to be startled by a familiar voice.

"Oi, surfer girl!" The australian boy called. I chuckled, propping my board up as I talked to him.

"Hey aussie boy." I replied, ruffling his hair. He swatted my hand away, grabbing his own board and placing it in the water. We paddled in sync towards the pitch black water, waiting for the perfect wave. I looked up at the night sky, illuminated by faint stars and the city lights.

"So, what brings you to hawaii?" he asked, breaking the silence.

"Oh, uh I live here. I have since I was four. What about you?"

"Oh, I'm just visiting. I love to travel, and Hawaii is just beautiful." He said, looking around. I nodded, not noticing that I was staring at him. I quickly looked away, then back towards the shore where Tate was coming from. He had a handful of glow sticks in his hand, and he handed them over when he approached us.

"Hey, C, hey dude. I brought us some goodies." He said, tossing them to us. I took several, placing them on my neck, and wrists. I secured them tightly to make sure they wouldn't fall off before looking for a wave. I slowly moved away from the two boys, closing my eyes and letting my hand feel the water.

"Huh, you just get more and more interesting." I heard Alex say. My eyes shot open, and I immediately began to feel insecure.

"Don't worry, I do it too. I feel a good one coming." He said, turning around. We looked out, seeing a large wave coming our way. We looked back at each other, instantly flipping onto our stomachs and paddling out.

"Alright, let's go!" I shouted, looking at him, then Tate. I turned, paddling towards the beach until i felt my body being lifted up by the water. I got up, staying close to the edge of the board, going back and forth for as long as I could. I reached my hand out, running it against the cool water. I closed my eyes, letting the ocean take over. Before long, I opened them again, looking to see Alex staring at me.

"What?" I yelled, looking back and forth. He just shrugged, flipping his board again. My eyes wandered around, landing on the beach. More specifically, everyone looking at us. I immediately jumped off of the board, letting the wave go over me. When it passed, I saw Alex coming up from the water as well.
