part 10: growing up fast

"Gooood morning Ronaldo! good morning Nanafua!"

"and a special good morning- auh-!"

"Hrm?" You look up from your drawing in time to watch steven as he suddenly lost his balance and fell out of a flower bush. Ooh? You smiled as he hopped right back onto his feet to regard you with a cheery smile. "-To you, lil' universe!"

You purred softly at this. Lil universe. Just a little nickname he came up with over the passing times that he had spent with you. You didn't know why, but it always gave you a feeling of warmth in your chest everytime he called you that. You flicked your tail and sat up straighter with a closed lipped smile, as steven leans closer a bit, looking you over with astonishment. "Wow, you've really gotten big overtime, haven't you?"

He gave you a little poke in the nose, which was what Steven called a "boop". It was a simple action, but it always sent a jolt of warmth and a foreign happiness through your body. You beam brightly at him, flashing a cheery, sharp toothed smile as your wings flared open in a cheery flutter. Squishing your cheeks, your mouth suddenly opened and abruptly, your small voice chirped.

"Yesh!"

Steven's eyes open wide in shock, a gasp erupting from his mouth as he shot straight up, startling you slightly. "Oh my gosh! Di-did you just speak?!" You tipped your head to the side, amused, confused but slightly unsettled by this reaction. You've seen him excited before, but this was an abrupt reaction. However you, with your best effort, spoke up again, though it was more unsure. "Y-yeah?"

Steven looked ready to burst with excitement. "Aah, this is too much!"

Before you could process it, he suddenly scoops you up into his arms, in a burst of elation, careful not to press against your wings too hard and swayed you in his grip slightly. "Come on, let's go tell the gems!" You lifted a brow, looking up at him with slightly wide eyes. "Gemsh?" he giggled and nodded, ruffling your hair. "Yeah, buddy! The gems! Pearl, Garnet and Amethyst!" You smiled brightly at him in excitement as he turns on his heel and heads towards the door, chuckling as you started chanting excitedly. "Gemsh! Gemsh! Gemsh!"

The gems! It's been so long since I've seen them!

...come to think of its been a while since I've been out of the dome as well.

"Hey guys, look who it is!"

The gems paused doing their various tasks and looked up to the source of voice, and as soon as their eyes met the display, joyful smiles spread across their face.

"Oh, well hello you two!" Pearl greets cheerfully, waving her fingers at you in which you instinctively return, making the gems giggle. "It's been awhile, cutie-pie." Garnet notes, smiling warmly. "Awe! And look at how big they've gotten now!" Amethyst exclaimed excitedly, sitting up straighter on the couch. "How has the teach been? Have they been improving well?" Pearl quipped, walking over to you and Steven as he chuckled, swaying you softly in his hold. "Oh, I don't know. let's see," He looks at you, a little smirk on his face. "(Name), can you tell me who they are?" You smiled again before piping up again. "Yesh! They the Crystal Gemsh!" You then pointed a clawed finger to the closest gem standing next to you. "Gem pearl!"

The gems immediately cooed in awe at hearing your English for the first time, with pearl sounding even more excited at hearing your high voice say her name. "That is SOOO CUTE!" Amethyst beamed leaping to her feet. "They're quite the talker." Garnet states, a more notable cheer in her tone. "And they said MY name!" Pearl proudly states, setting a hand on her chest. You and steven beamed proudly at their reaction, with you swaying your tail from side to side subtly in pride. "It took a while, but I think they're getting the hang of it." you smiled pridefully. "yesh!" Steven giggled again, and ruffled your hair, eliciting a purr of content from you. "So, what do you two plan on doing for today?" Steven shrugged, setting you down and watching as you wandered over towards amethyst. "Well, I don't know... I figured that since they've been so good, I'd-" Garnet suddenly placed her hands on her hips. "You should take them outside for a walk around the town."

Steven flinched at the suggestion, suddenly becoming tense. "Wh-what?" Garnet shrugs, not noticing his tension. "They've been in the greenhouse long enough. Besides, they're big enough to fend themselves should anything happen." He stared for a moment before putting on a nervous smile, looking strangely uneasy. "I-I don't know about that guys..." He looks over to you, who was playing with amethyst's long hair. "They're still kinda... inexperienced." Amethyst snickered as you cooed in awe at her hairs softness. "Come on, Steven, you can't just keep them inside forever. You should get yourselves some fresh air." Pearl stated, crossing her arms, watching as you take your attention off the purple gem's hair and wander to the window. Steven rubbed the back of his head wearily, biting his lip as he groaned in what sounded like hesitance and discomfort. "It's... just.. i don't want them to-" Amethyst looked up at him with a reassuring smile. "Aw, come on, dude, ya gotta show em' around a little! What's the worst that could happen?" Steven put his hand over his mouth, his weary gaze flickering between all of the gems. "I-" His eyes settled back on you, who was gazing outside of the window, with an almost longing gaze in your eyes. It's been a while since I've felt sand under my feet... You look back at him, with pleading puppy eyes and tapped a claw against the window. "Outshide?"

After a moment, steven gave a wistful sigh of defeat.
