HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

" You ? Head Boy ? Has Dumbledore lost it or what ? " hollered Lily from the Heads compartment as James stood there with an amused grin on his face.

Clearly he had been waiting for this moment - to tell Lily, the amazing, cute and smart redhead he'd been asking out since their third year that he - James Henry Potter was the Head Boy.

Lily on the other hand thought otherwise. She was convinced that Dumbledore had gone mad but seemed to understand why he had chosen James.

James Potter was after all the Gryffindor  Quidditch Team Captain and pretty good at studies, and much better than her at Transifiguration - though she would never agree to that infront of James. He was also a pretty good leader, except when he get's too carried away being an arrogant toerag and playing pranks at the school (mostly on the Slytherins) along with the rest of the Marauders - Sirius Black , Peter Pettigrew and Remus Lupin (though Lily thought Remus was a good guy - he was a prefect and fairly good at studies). And to top it all of - James Potter was good looking.

" No Lily - James Potter and good looking ? No way" she thought as she pushed the thoughts out of her mind and looked up at James as he ran his fingers through his hair and still wore that annoying grin on his face.

" Okay Potter, lets get this over with" she said exasperatedly as she walked out to enter the Prefects Compartment. 

" Lead the way Evan's " said Potter, who to Lily's surprise had actually meant it respectfully - something she thought James Potter was not capable of.

Well, at least the meeting didn't go as bad as she had expected it to. James and Lily introduced themselves, gave the prefects their patrolling schedules for patrolling the Hogwarts Express and dodged a few irrelevant questions about her blood status (precisely - a mudblood, as they called it).

James however came up with a few great solutions to the Slytherins problems, much to their dismay.

Lily shot him a thankful glance as the prefects left the compartment. "Well, that went well" she said looking at James, who yet again sat in the compartment messing with his hair.

"It did, didn't it ?" he said, sounding proud of himself. "Anyways, if you don't need me I'll head back to the guys. Alice and Mar are with them" he said, looking at her expectantly.

"Wanna tag along ?" he asked, trying not to sound desperate.

Alice and Marlene were her best friends and Marlene knew James all her life, they were practically like a brother and sister, so it made sense why Marlene was sitting with the Marauders. Besides it was their last year at Hogwarts, better make memories when she has the time.

" Yeah, why not" she said as he opened the compartment door, much like a gentleman, and walked behind her as they made their way.

"Wow ! It's been an hour and he still hasn't asked me out. Besides he seems to have changed a lot since their fifth year" she thought to herself as she opened the compartment door, to find the rest of the Marauders and Alice and Marlene laughing their asses off, and made her way over to sit beside Marlene, who now had tears in her eyes.

"Hey Lily flower" Sirius chirped. Usually Lily would hate someone addressing her as Lily flower but she made an exception for Sirius, especially because they understood each other and related to their respective family problems.

" Hey Black" Lily greeted back.

The rest of the journey was quite pleasant as she was left alone, and zoned out. James said nothing, but looked longingly at Lily as she looked out the window.

An hour later, he shook her profusely as she came back from her dreamland and looked into James's hazel eyes as he said "Evans, we need to get the First Years! GET UP!" he said as he pulled her up to her feet.

They made their way to the platform where they shouted " FIRST YEARS THIS WAY ! " and were glad to see the students piling in front of them. They led them down to the boats and they themselves made their way to the Heads carriage and set off to Hogwarts. A short ride later they were all piling in to the wide corridors of Hogwarts as they made their way into the Great Hall - for their last ever Welcome Back Feast.

" Hey Minni! How was your summer" - she could her Sirius's voice, and a minute later " You will address me as Professor McGonagall, Mr, Black. My summer was good though, thank you " she said, and she knew that McGonagall was trying hard to hide a glint of affection for Sirius in her eyes, as she walked past them.

The feast as usual was extravagant, and Dumbledore said his usual welcome back speech and the set of rules. However he did call the Heads to his office before the feast ended. And so here they were- Lily and James as they entered Dumbledore's office.

" Ah, come in. Come in. Lily James, have a seat" he said gesturing towards the chairs placed in front of his desk.

" Firstly, Congratulations. Becoming the  Head Boy and Head Girl is no joke." he said looking at James, most likely referring to the numerous pranks the Marauders had played on teachers and students alike.

"Second, I need you to understand that with all the tensions brewing in the outside world with Voldemort" he said, as if Voldemort's name wasn't a taboo and as of people weren't trembling at the sound of merely his name.

"I have reason to believe that a lot of muggleborns will be targeted this year, especially after the increase in the interest of Dark Magic amongst the students of Slytherin" he said.

Both Lily and James knew what he meant, everyone in the Black family (except Sirius -he disowned his parents ) and the Malfoys had joined the death eaters.

" Hence this job is of great importance, that being the reason I would also like both of you to patrol the corridors twice a week and once on the weekend" he said looking down at both of them. James personally felt that he was proud of his choice.

" Now coming to your dorms- they are on the fifth floor behind the Painting of Miss Mary. You can collectively decide the password. However, I must warn you that your friends need to have minimal access to the room. There is a kitchen where all the desired supplies will be provided" he said eyeing both of them, for they were going to be enjoying the perks of their positions.

" And funny business is not allowed" he said ending in a rather dramatic way and said " That is all. Thank you " he said showing them their way out.

As they approached the gargoyle to leave, Dumbledore called out " Actually, forget about the funny business. Kids ought to have some fun. And I trust you both to enjoy this last year, as much as you can" he said smiling at them.

James and Lily turned around, unable to hide their smirks at Dumbledore's word. James glanced at Lily and averted his attention towards Dumbledore and said " We will Professor. We always do. Always"
