A Day In The Rye

Chapter 16

Skai's pov

I can't believe I've been asleep for so many hours. That was sleep well deserved, even though my neck hurts, it was worth it.

I look to my left and Gabriel is asleep too and when I look around me, to see where we are, I notice we're in a deserted parking lot, for a shopping mart which looks like it hasn't been in use for years.

As though sensing I'm awake, Gabriel wakes up too and he smiles at me, I'm shocked because that's the first genuine smile I've seen on his face, as if reading my thoughts, he starts laughing and his laughter is contagious so I join in.

"I smile too you know? I'm human." he says, while running his hand through his hair.

I nod, still laughing.

Then he reaches behind my seat and brings out two takeout packs and hands one to me.

"I wasn't sure what to get you, so I just got you some chicken and fries. I sincerely hope you're not vegan." he says shyly.

I even notice a red tint on his cheeks, but I decide against calling him out on it.

So, I laugh instead.

"God, no I'm not... I'll die without meat."

We dig in and after eating, once again it's time to hit the road. I ask him where we're going a few times, but he just smirks and says nothing. I occupy myself with watching the trees and other cars before I sleep off once more.

When I wake up, I notice the car stopped and I look at Gabriel who's just staring out of the window, when I turn to look at where we are, I see massimo's house. I rub my eyes and its still there, I repeat the action like 3 more times .

"keep rubbing on your eyes like that and you'll end up hurting yourself."

He says as he gives me a funny look.

"This is... This is..."

"Your boyfriends house, yeah I know. Now, get down before I change my mind and take you back to José."

My eyes widen and he starts laughing again and I join him, then I hug him and thank him.

When I get down, I hear a car pulling up behind, what if its José? I turn slowly when I hear a door shut and I look up, only to see massimo.

My face splits into a wide grin and I run to him as he speed walks towards me. He lifts me up and I wrap my legs around his torso and throw my arms round his neck. He kisses me for a while, then holds me so close we could become one, a tear slides down his face and I catch it with my finger and he places me on my feet. He leans his forehead against mine and we just stare into each others eyes.

"I've missed you so much baby, I was going crazy..." He confesses.

"I love you baby, I love you so much!"

"I love you even more Cara mía."

We kiss again, its even deeper than before, like he's trying to pass a message of how much he missed me and I respond with equal passion.

"Get a room guys."

I look up and see charming .

"Charming!"

I'm about to run towards Chris, but massimo pulls me back possesively to his side. He leans and whispers in my ear.

"I'm never letting you out of my sight, ever again!"

Then he kisses me and looks up and glares at a grinning Chris.

That's when I remember Gabriel is still in the truck, I free myself from massimo's grip and run towards the drivers side to see Gabriel deep in thought.

"Hey kiddo! I see you got your happy ending." he smiles.

"yes, and it's all thanks to you and Guy."

He gives me a forced smile and I know he's worried about Guy, I am too.

"Come say hi."

He simply nods and steps out of the car and we head back to massimo who seems to be watching my every move like a hawk watching its prey.

"Boys meet my..."

I'm cut off by Chris.

"Boys?... I don't know about your 'boyfriend' over there, but I is a man sweetie."

Massimo nods agreeing with him, I roll my eyes and shake my head.

"As before, meet Gabriel, he and Guy rescued me."

They shake each others hands and Chris reminds us we're still in the driveway, so we move inside.

Once we are settled, we are informed that Guy is in the hospital right now, and he's doing so much better than when they took him there.

Gabe was about to leave the moment we were told this new piece of information, but massimo informs him they've made arrangements to have Guy moved here, because it's dangerous back there, with José still on the loose.

We agree and Gabriel thanks him. Massimo shows him to the guest room, while I go in to massimo's room to freshen up, I've missed coming here.

I start to undress when I hear a knock on the bathroom door.

"who's it?"

"Me."

I unlock the door and he walks in and hugs me tight again. Then he turns and locks the door.

"Uh, what are you doing?"

"Let's take our shower skai, it's been a long day and remember I said I'm not letting you out of my sight."

Knowing it's a lost battle already, I just nod.

I strip and he's watching me, when I'm completely bare, I hear a sharp intake of air, he is staring at the blue black mark on my stomach caused by one of marcello's men hitting me continuously.

That brings back memories and causes me to shiver, I immediately grab a towel to cover up, I feel ashamed and dirty, I don't know if I can tell massimo I was raped.

The moment I wrap the towel around me, it's snatched from my body, I look at massimo with teary eyes, I didn't even realise I was crying. He pulls me into a comforting hug.

"You're so beautiful Skai."

I snap my head up to look at him and he has a sincere smile on his face. His eyes which have always spoken more words than his lips confirm the truth and sincerity in his words.

I hug him and cry into his chest.
