"I always forget how small this place is!" Ellie exclaimed. I sighed as I closed the door behind her and flopped back on the couch to continue folding laundry. The tv playing a random show I wasn't paying attention to, the volume was turned down pretty low. I glanced up at her. She was wearing a long sleeve grey dress with two belts around her waist. She hung up her mint green jacket on the coat rack and took off her boots near the door. She walked over to me and set her ridiculously large bag down by the couch.
"Yep, you say that every time you come over," I forced a chuckle. She nodded with a gentle smile.
"It's not a bad thing," she said. "It's actually quite nice. It's perfect for you and Miles." She sat down next to me. Ellie was one of the few people I was never too anxious around. There was something about her aura that was so peaceful, it was hard to explain. She was one of the kindest people I knew but was never afraid to say it how it was, but in the gentlest ways. Unless it was Miles' dad. She would go off on him like no tomorrow. But there was something comforting about that too.
"Now!" She clapped her hands together excitedly. "How has everything been?" I was getting a bit tired of that question. I felt like every day I was being asked that.
"Fine," I responded. "Doctors say he's recovering nicely, might even go back to work soon-" I was cut off with a laugh and a tut-tut. I frowned slightly.
"I talk to Miles all the time, I know how he's doing," she smiled.
"Oh, right, well our relationship is doing good, too?" I was confused as to what answers she wanted from me.
"Ah, yes. Miles says he's slowly remembering you," she told me. I perked up.
"Really?"
"Well not all of the remembering is full blown memories but he's remembering being with you, if that makes sense. He said he could understand why he would have proposed, he's falling quite hard. A second time!" Ellie sighed pleasantly. "Maybe that's the good in this. He gets to fall in love with you all over again, isn't that wonderful?"
"Yeah," I nodded. "He... He didn't tell me any of that." I felt guilt eating me up as I remembered some of the texts Cal and I exchanged the previous night after Miles had fallen asleep. They weren't terrible, nothing sexual. At least, nothing overtly sexual. They just were texts I wouldn't want anyone else to see.
"It's also good we can keep him away from, you know," I continued. She hummed in agreement.
"I'm happy you're also trying to find the positive in this. You can't let yourself get wrapped up in the awful. If you're not careful, it could consume you. You could make some bad choices," she was still smiling sweetly at me, and her words were said gently. But they chilled me to the bone. As if she knew. I just put on a smile and nodded.
"Auntie Ellie?" We both turned the direction of Miles' call. He walked out of the room with a huff. "I thought that was you. You're here early." I was relieved to have him join us. He walked over to my side of the couch first giving me a quick peck before sitting himself between us.
"Well I might have gotten a bit over excited," she admitted. "I got you a gift!" Miles and I raised an eyebrow.
"A gift?" He questioned. I slowly went back to folding the clothes in front of me. She nodded and stood to rummage through her big bag. Miles leaned over in anticipation, trying to see. Ellie eventually pulled out a case that looked all too familiar. Miles gasped as it was transferred into his hands. He slowly clicked it open revealing the most beautiful violin I had ever seen. And being with Miles meant I've seen quite a few.
"Wow," was all I could manage. It looked expensive. Miles tentatively touch his fingers on the caramel wood, completely entranced. It had been awhile since he had touched one. We hadn't yet taken his out of storage. The Violin was one of his favourite instruments and definitely his favourite string instrument.
"You didn't," he choked out as he slowly took it out of the case. Holding it tenderly.
"I did," Ellie beamed. "Do you like it?" Miles seemed at a loss for words. I couldn't imagine how much he missed the music. He smiled softly, his eyes never leaving the glossy wood, turning it on its side to examine it more. There were a multitude of gorgeous carvings on the side that were so simple yet elegant. He pulled out the bow slowly, carefully not to touch the strings. It had been a while since I saw him this happy.
"Play something, bean boy," I whispered. He looked up at me then back at the violin. He smiled wider and stood, gently placing it on his shoulder and chin. Ellie looked excited, she hadn't heard his music in a long while I bet. The moment the bow touched the strings of the violin, magic was made. I wondered if this was something akin to riding a bike for him. It would just be something he never forgot. I didn't fully recognise the song but it was beautiful regardless. Ellie held her hand to her heart, she looked close to tears. I was surprised I wasn't either. There was something so special about Miles and music, it was almost as if they were one being. As if the music was an extension of his soul. I closed my eyes, enjoying each note that blessed my ears.
It stopped abruptly though. I opened my eyes and looked up at Miles. His left hand holding the violin shook, the instrument dropped. I stood and gently picked it up from him. Letting him sit back down and placing the bow back into the case.
"What's wrong, hon?" Ellie asked placing a hand on his shoulder. He shrugged her off.
"Nothing, my hand started hurting," his voice was so defeated. It definitely wasn't nothing to him. I put my hand on his. His fingers cold and trembling under mine.
"You'll get there eventually, Miles," I whispered. "What you played sounded beautiful still. That's a fantastic thing. You still haven't forgotten the music. That's good." Ellie put her hand back on his shoulder.
"That's right, and when you're finally fully healed, you'll be back to composing and playing masterpieces! Just like you always have," She chimed in. Miles was silent but nodded. He rest his head on my chest and I wrapped my arms around him.
"It'll get easier, Miles, I promise," I reassured. He nodded again his face now buried into my chest, his body shaking. I think he was crying, but I couldn't hear him sniffling. I looked up at Ellie who seemed like she was trying to think of something to say. I also couldn't think of much. I just held him and rub his back.
"I'll make lunch," Ellie said. Grabbing her big bag and taking it with her into the kitchen. That would be nice, Ellie was really good at making food. Miles was holding onto me now. He was definitely crying. I couldn't imagine how he felt. If I ever hurt my hands and I couldn't paint, even for a small while, I would be more than devastated. I felt my phone buzz in my pants. I glanced down at my crying fiancé in my arms. I contemplated grabbing it. It probably wasn't the best idea. I had to be there for Miles in his time of need. I squeezed him tightly to me and kissed him on the top of his head, whispering 'it'll be okay'. I heard his breathing falter as he continued to cry. I could feel his tears through my shirt.
Bzzt.
My phone buzzes again. I internally sighed and slowly reach into my back pocket to pull out my phone. I gave Miles another kiss to reassure that I was still there for him while I unlocked my phone to check the new messages from Cal.
Heyy
Wanna see something?
I think you'll like it ;)I withheld a groan as I typed back a response.
Depends.
Is it your dick? You would like that wouldn't you haha
Not rite now.
I thought for a moment and realised how that sounded. I blushed hard and quickly added:
Or ever.
Ooo maybe later then
Well it's not that but it's a close second I guessUr Not funny.
But Ookaay??;p
He sent a photo of him in the mirror without a shirt. His abs and pecs were carved into his sweat-glistened, deeply tanned skin. One of his hands held his phone and the other hooked into his shorts and pulled it down slightly. Not enough to show anything but just enough to be tantalising.
Haha

As an artist I appreciateMaybe next time we're alone you can cop a feel ;)
Maybe...
I'll push em together and squeeze lmao"Are you on your phone," the man in front of me sniffles and looked up. I made a small squeak noise as I panicked and immediately turned my phone off. I stammered thinking of an excuse as Miles wiped his eyes.
"I, yes- well I was- it was just a, uh, a work email. It was important, you now how your dad is. I didn't want to annoy him with a late response," I stuttered. He looked at me unconvinced.
"Oh, okay," his tone was uncertain. I placed my hand on his cheek.
"I'm sorry, should have focused only on you. You're more important than some stupid email, Miles," I tried to put all of my sincerity in my voice. I dragged him into A kiss on the mouth. He kissed me back with a hum. When he pulled away he smiled.
"It's okay, I get it. Work is important, too," he said.
"Feeling better, though?" I asked caressing his face. He leaned into my touch.
"Yeah, sorry, I guess I got too emotional," he sighed, adjusting himself to straddle my lap and wrapping his arms around my neck. I placed mine around his waist and pulled him close.
"Don't apologise, you didn't do anything wrong. You're allowed to feel sad, I know this isn't easy for you," I murmured. "But it will get better. It all will. Your memories, your hands and arms, your balance... it will all come back to you. And you'll create more amazing music, I mean, all the best art comes out of struggle right?" I heard a laugh rumble in his chest. He pulled away to look at me.
"I suppose you're right. I have been writing more poetry recently," he told me.
"You didn't tell me that! I wanna read it," I exclaimed. Miles blushed and pressed his forehead against mine.
"They aren't very good, though," he giggled. I rubbed my nose on his.
"Lies!" I playfully growled pinning him onto the couch, ignoring the vibration notifications from my phone, throwing it in the laundry bin. I nibbled at his ear and tickled him as he laughed and tried to push me off.
Ellie cleared her throat from the arch way into the kitchen.
"Boys, please keep it PG," she scoffed. "Miles do you mind helping me with some things? Let's let Hansel finish folding your underwear." I got off of Miles and let him get up. He stood with a small groan.
"Sure, also I'm sorry I reacted so sadly but I do love the gift. It's incredible, thank you," he walked over to her and she smiled, hooking arms with him and dragging him into the kitchen. Leaving me alone on the couch with the laundry and my phone. I picked up one of the remaining unfolded clothing and looked back before hesitantly picking up my cellphone.
He sent a video this time. I turned down the audio all the way down to watch. The video was more close up on his pecs that he flexed out. His gorgeous face was visible. He bit his lip seductively and his dark umber eyes sultry and hooded. He ran his hand down his chest carelessly. His hand coming back up to grope at his pecs. I watched him chuckle. I couldn't hear it but imagined it was deep and husky. Then the video ended.
I stared at the phone.
My soul felt empty from viewing it. That icy cold feeling of guilt bubbling under my skin again. Racing through my fingers and down my spine.
What the fuck is wrong with me.
I glanced back at the kitchen area before liking the video and asking for more.
