DAY 1

"Amy!" I heard a voice as I opened the door slowly and stepped into my house. "Why are you so late?"

I nervously stood in front of my brother, Taylor. He didn't look furious, I guess. "Um, I was talking to someone." I said. It was the truth.

He placed his hands on his hips angrily. "Who is this someone? I called all of your friends." Of course he did, but did not take the logical action.

"You didn't call me." I gulped. "I would have told you."

He opened his mouth a little and fell on the couch. "Sorry, I'm tired. College is hectic and you know how worried I am about you."

"I know." I said, ruffling his brown hair. Even though Taylor was my brother, I had to admit he was really good looking. He had a perfect completion, good body and amazing chocolate colored eyes. I didn't look like his sister at all - I was so imperfect, but that was fine. They had to be someone who would like me too.

"Can you do me a favor, Amy?" He asked, his eyes dropping. "Can you tell Pearl that I'm not feeling well and can't work at the library today?"

"I'll call her right away." I nodded. I dialed her Pearl's number and waited until she picked it up. Pearl was a friend of my mother's. Taylor and I worked part time in her library.

She picked it up finally. "Hey, Amelia. How are you doing?"

"I'm fine." I said. "I wanted to inform yo-"

"When are you coming?" She asked, in a haste. "The library is in a mess. Can you and Taylor do extra time today?"

"I wanted to tell you that." I said. "Tay isn't exactly well, so he won't be able to come today. Can we do the work some other day?"

"Its a mess!" She yelled. "Plus, you can't take leave at such a short notice. You will have to come. At least, you."

I sighed. My brother was sick and I couldn't even take care of him. "Yes, I'm coming."

"Good." She said. "Come in at five, and leave at eight."

"Three hours?!" I shrieked and a half sleeping Taylor hushed me from behind. I lowered my volume. "That's a little too much."

"You work here." She said. "So does your brother. You'll have to take up your brother's too."

"We work for an hour each." I said back. This lady couldn't do math.

"I told you about extra time." She said. "Half an hour each."

I rolled my eyes. "Okay. I'll be there in fifteen."

"Bravo!" She said and I heard a clap. "You're an angel, you know that?"

"Totally." I said and hung up. "Tay, you'll be fine without me?"

He didn't reply; he was fast asleep.

The library smelled as good as ever. Pearl greeted me the minute stepped in. "Amelia, I'm glad to see you." She said, her face full of makeup.

The feeling isn't mutual, I wanted to say. After Mom - who was a businesswoman and partners with my Dad in Washington - Pearl was the only older female person in my life. She could be nice to us, but she could be a lot too.

"Same here." I said, shutting my mind. "So, what should I do?"

She nodded and leaded me to a stack of adult books. "Keep them in the shelves, will you? Next, go to the children's section."

"Where's Ian?" I asked, thinking about Tay's friend who worked here. He was also Pearl's son.

"Well, he's not well." She said, hesitating. "College is hectic." Ian went to the same college as Taylor and in the same year.
