Emily

I groaned, rolling my eyes and dropping my head back, "It is just my luck that I somehow wind up in the same class as this idiot."

My best friend raised an eyebrow as she glanced toward my ex-boyfriend, "Brandon? Really?"

I sighed, glancing back at him. Brandon seemed to be busy talking to one of his friends. He didn't even notice me coming in.

When he finally noticed my eye contact, a weird familiar feeling of butterflies returned, causing heat to rush back to my face.

No, no. It was just embarrassing that he caught me looking, I told myself sternly.

It appeared though that Quinn caught my slightly panicked expression.

"Emily! I know that look!!" Quinn scolded as she reminded me, "You have a boyfriend. Do you really want to do to Calvin what Brandon did to you?"

My sweet boyfriend, Calvin.

Oh, how I loved his unconditional kindness and love. I could never even imagine hurting him like that.

"I-I don't know what you're talking about!! I was NOT-" I scoffed, coughing a bit as I struggled to piece together a coherent sentence, "-there is no look!"

"Sure, Em," she rolled her eyes.

I knew she knew me too well to believe whatever that reaction was, but it was worth a shot. If I could convince everyone else, maybe I could convince myself.

"Look," Quinn pointed out, "I saw what he did to you. He's a heartbreaker, and you're finally with a guy who deserves you. Don't let him mess it up for you."

Like I would act on anything. Fat chance.

Even if I was internally blowing up at seeing my ex-boyfriend, I would never actually do anything to hurt Calvin.

Before I had a chance to tell that to my best friend, the professor started her announcement.

"Okay, class! Your next project will be done with partners, randomly assigned by my computer. Check the listing by the door after class, and get in touch with your partners as soon as possible."

Once class was over, everyone slowly ushered to the back of the room, cell phones in hand to take photos of our assigned partners' names

Once class was over, everyone slowly ushered to the back of the room, cell phones in hand to take photos of our assigned partners' names. Quinn left without doing so, as I'd offered to tell her who her partner was.

I mentally rooted for it to be with my best friend, but I was sure the professor would've manually made sure herself that we wouldn't work together. We talked way too much in class, often receiving her glares in response, which would temporarily shut us up before we forgot again and she'd make a point of it in her lecture.

Her name came up first, and I saw she was with someone else.

Yeah, I knew the professor would do that.

I traced my finger down the screen until it landed on a familiar name: Brandon Gardner. Right next to it... my name.

Just as my luck would have it, my own freaking name printed beside his
