"Happy birthday dear Chi-chi, happy birthday to...?"
"Me, mama, me! It my birthday!"
"Ha yes, it is! Blow your candle baby." Fuyumi giggles seeing her daughter blow raspberries on the cake in an attempt to blow out the candle. She crouches down next to the seat she's in and moves close to the cake.
"Want some help?" A small hand is shoved in front of her face, blocking her vision.
"No, I do it!" Her daughter gives her a small smirk, one that looks so familiar to a ghost of her past. Unexpectedly, her daughter releases one of the feathers from her back and uses it to fan out the flame, before letting it fall to the ground.
"Chiasa. I said you're not allowed to use your quirk unless I give you permission." She gives her a stern look mixed with a small smile.
"But it my birthday mama," she pouts.
Fuyumi giggles and ruffles her dirty blonde hair.
"Fine, just for today. No more though, okay?" She nods her head grinning and claps her hands together in excitement while she watches her mum slice the cake into even pieces. Just as she's about to plate up, the laptop in front of them produces a noise.
"Ah look, Grandma's calling!" Fuyumi lifts Chi-chi up from the chair and takes her place, bringing her to her lap. She moves the cake and plates to the side and brings the laptop in front of them, and opens the Skype call.
"Oh goodness, am I even doing this right...Fuyumi? Fuyumi! Chi-chi! There you are!"
"Gamma!" Fuyumi stifles a laugh at her daughters attempt to speak.
"Chi-chi, happy birthday sweet girl! My goodness, how old are you now?" She watches the toddler turn to her mum to ask for her age. Rei's heart swells watching them, Fuyumi suited motherhood so well.
"You're 2 years old baby," Fuyumi whispers in her ear.
Chi-chi turns to the camera and holds up 4 fingers. "Two!" Rei and Fuyumi laugh loudly at the girl, while she looks around confused.
"Chi-chi! I've got a surprise for you!" Rei sings.
"Show me, show me, show me!" Her tiny wings flutter in excitement, some of the feathers brushing against Fuyumis lips, one even getting in her mouth. She moves her face away from the camera to spit it out when she hears two deep voices come through the screen.
"Happy birthday Chi-chi!" Her heart flutters at the sound of her brothers' voices. She comes back into their view and grins. "Fuyumi!" She feels her eyes begin to water, seeing their faces. They looked older and more mature, even their voices had gotten deeper.
"H-hi guys! My gosh, yous look so grown and so handsome." Their faces soften looking at their sister as she wipes her eyes.
"Ah, I'm the only handsome one!" Natsuo announces. His gaze shifts to Chi-chi and he gives her a wink. "How's my favourite niece going?" Natsuo and Chi-chi engage in their own conversation, excluding everyone else. Fuyumi was never not entertained seeing how well Natsuo was able to hold a conversation with Chi-chi, despite her being so young. Shoto turns his attention away from his niece to his sister.
"Fuyumi. How are you?"
"I'm doing good, keeping busy. Staying low."
"Do you need anything? Is the house too small? I can come up and-"
"Shoto, relax. We're good, better than good. Thanks to you guys." She gives a small smile to her family on the screen, then at her daughter. "I promise. When she begins school and I start working I'll pay you ba-"
"No, Fuyumi." They all say at the same time. Rei holds each of her sons' hands and looks at her daughter. "You basically raised them. You were forced to take on a role that you never asked for, it was never meant for you. You had every right to walk away, but you never did. Let us repay you, please." Fuyumi holds Chi-chi a little tighter and feels her eyes watering again.
"Thanks, guys. I wish I could hug you all right now...I miss you all so much."
"Then come back."
"Shoto, I c-can't."
"Yes you can. You won't have to worry about him."
"Shoto, don't bring him up. Not in front of her." She looks down, grateful that Natsuo is still keeping her distracted.
"S-Sorry Fuyumi, I didn't mean to do that."
"It's okay, don't sweat it," she assures him. She runs a hand through her hair and plucks one of Chi-chi's feathers from it, catching her brothers and mothers attention.
"Is that a feather!?" They say in unison.
"It's red!"
"Whos feather is it?"
"Is he there?! I swear Fuyumi."
"Chill out!" She moves the feather in front of the camera, holding it by the calamus. It was a small multi coloured feather, it faded from white into a bright red. "Her quirk manifested about two months ago, earlier than most people. She already knows how to control them to do small tasks." Her family is silent, with their jaws hanging open. "I was going to tell you all, but it slipped my mind. I've been busy tryna make sure she doesn't hurt herself."
Chi-chi turns around to Fuyumi yawning, her wings fully exposed to her grandma and uncles. "Mama, sleep time?"
"Sure baby, say goodnight to Grandma and Uncle Shoto and Natsuo." She turns her head and smiles.
"Na-night gamma. Na-night Uncle Shoto. Na-night Uncle Natsuo." She looks up at Fuyumi and kisses her cheek. "Na-night mama, love you." She puts her head into Fuyumis neck closes her eyes.
"Night Chi-chi. love you too," she whispers.
Natsuo, Shoto and Rei look at Chi-chi's wings in awe, they were tiny yet so beautiful. The pure white blending into a bright crimson red, the colours exactly like Fuyumis hair.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell yous earlier, it's just been a bit stressful."
"S'okay sis, no need to apologise."
"He's right, you don't need to say sorry. But please Fuyumi, at least consider coming to see us."
"Shoto I ca-"
"Please." Fuyumi looks at her mother. Her eyes full of plea and desperation. "I know I sound selfish, but I miss you both. I'd love to see you guys, plus Shoto is graduating soon, it'd be nice if we could all attend together...as a family." Fuyumi looks down and lets out a shaky breath. Her mum never asked for anything, yet deserved everything.
"O-Okay...okay."
"Really sis!?" She looks up and sees the joy written on Natsuos face, even Shoto was grinning.
"We'll figure out the details later on, but Natsuo and I will definitely be coming to pick you two up," Shoto says. Although she feels extremely anxious about going back home, her brothers eagerness gives her a sense of comfort.
"I look foward to seeing you guys." Chi-chi squirms a in Fuyumis arm, her wings flapping a little. "I better lay her down. Thanks for calling guys, it means so much to us, honestly."
"It's all good sis, take care okay?"
"Night Fuyumi, we'll see you soon."
"Be safe, kiss my granddaughter for me!" Fuyumi blows a kiss towards the screen and waves.
"Bye guys, I love you all." She ends the call and closes the laptop. The cake comes into view, causing Fuyumi to sigh. She manages to put the cake back in the box it came in, and put it in the fride, all whilst holding Chi-chi.
"You can sleep with mama tonight," she whispers in her hair. She finally makes her way back to the room and carefully places Chi-chi under the blanket, sliding in next to her. She gives a small kiss to her forehead before drifting off to sleep.
"Happy birthday baby."
