The Golden Wolf

Chapter 3: The Alpha Family

Knowing that if I don't hurry and get dressed mom will just bring the Luna upstairs, I hurriedly throw some clothes on. Since I'm going for comfort, I just grab a flowy dress and scoop my hair up into a messy bun. No one to impress, even if she is the Luna. As I head down stairs, I can hear them talking. I pause on the steps to see if I can tell who all is here.

"I really think she's the one," I heard a soft female voice says.

After a sharp intake of breath, "are you sure?" that was definitely my mom's voice.

"it cannot be. They do not exist anymore!" That was my dad. Beyond scared now I froze where I stood.

"Come here child, please join us in the conversation." that same female voice spoke again.

Caught eavesdropping I forced myself to continue down the stairs. I was not expecting what I saw. A beautiful woman was sitting on our couch. She had medium length brown hair and warm green eyes. She smiled a prefect smile and motioned for me over. I slowly made my way into the living room and sat in the chair, as far away as I could. I think she noticed for I saw a twinkle in her eye.

"Emersyn, my name is Leola. This is my husband Leon," she said gesturing to a man I just noticed. He looked intimidating to say the least. Tall, dark brown hair, cut short, piercing brown eyes, with muscles poking out everywhere. It was clear he was the Alpha.

Our eyes met, he nodded at me in a hello type of way and I felt a shudder go through me. I felt a growl rise up and before I could register what was happening, the growl slipped through my lips. Surprise flickered through everyone's face and I ran from the room beyond embarrassed.

Thoughts raced through my head; how could I be so dumb! I just signed my death warrant. Growling at my Alpha? Oh Goddess. My mind racing, I just ran. I headed towards to west, into the woods towards the lake. I needed space and I needed peace and quiet. I couldn't think. All these voices in my head was going to make me go crazy. Wait. Voices? I stopped quickly trying to listen to the voices and tripped over a root. I went tumbling down the slope towards the lake. I tried to catch myself on anything I could reach but there wasn't enough to grip.

Splash! I hit the water hard and fast. Struggling against the current, I finally broke the surface only to go under again. I can't swim. I never learned how to, never saw the need to. Guess that's a harsh life lesson to learn as I continue to fight to stay above the water.

A golden light surrounded me and I prayed to the Goddess to let my family know I loved them.

The next morning.

"Emersyn!!"

Numerous voices called out. I could hear them vaguely, it sounded like I was under water. I felt warm and cozy I didn't wanna move. I couldn't move if I wanted to. There was a weight on my body. Where am I? I slowly opened my eyes against the bright sun. Wasn't it late when I ran off? What happened? What time is it? Oh, my family must be so worried about me! I struggled to sit up but my paws weren't cooperating with me. Paws? I shifted?

Calm down my dear. All is well. We are safe now. The fae pulled us from the waters. I am sorry for the forced shift, but I had to save us. My name is Camilla and I am your wolf. The voice was soft and sweet, like a breeze in my mind. I sighed happily.

I am so happy to meet you Camilla! I never thought I would get a wolf. I remember falling into the lake. I tried but the current was too strong I just couldn't stay above the water. But tell me, why did the fae step in? They don't like us wolfs. I don't understand, where are we?

We are in a cave off the river. It was the river we fell into not the lake. The fae saved us because, well dear why don't you have a look at our coat?

I jumped up the best I could. I felt like I was learning to walk all over again, which in a way I suppose I was. I strolled over the water's edge and peered down. My coat looked beautiful. It was shiny, thick, and gold. Wait gold? Wolfs aren't gold. How did this happen. What is the pack going to say?

Cam, how are we gold? the nerves are obvious.

We are special. There has not been a golden wolf in 10,000 years. We are a gift from the Goddess Nyx herself. The pack will adore us. Many will come for us. We are different from the rest. We are stronger, faster, heal quicker, and almost immortal. We will become great leaders of our kind, my dear. It has been written in the stars. Cam states proudly.

With the voices getting closer, my anxiety kicked in full force.

That's a lot of pressure on us, isn't it? How will I know what to do? What's right or wrong? I whisper meekly.

With great power comes great struggles, this is true. But we have each other. We shall learn together. Allow me to shift back so we do not surprise the pack. This can be our secret for a little while longer.

Shifting back was easy. My bones cracked and snapped back into place. Thankfully the fae had left me clothes and I easily threw them on before rushing out of the cave to find my family.

"Mom, Dad," I called out running towards their smell.
