Chapter Twelve

I stood talking with Ned by the school bus. All of a sudden one of the teammates, Abe, said:
"Hey, it's Peter."
"..Guys.. hey"
Peter said and I turned around and smiled.
"Peter?"
MJ said then walked over to him

"Um...Yeah, I was hoping maybe I could rejoin the Uh team."

"No, no way. You can't just quit on us, stroll up, and be welcomed back by everyone."
Flash said going over to him

Our teacher Mr.Harrigton walked out of the bus.
"Hey, welcome back Peter! Flash, you're back to first alternate."

"What?"
flash said confused and looked around at all of us

"He's taking your place."
I said and winked.

"Let's get on the bus!"
Mr.Harrington said and we all started walking towards the door.
I looked over at flash as he grumpily took off his jacket and threw it into peters arms.

We were on the road. We had started to practice and were given small bells as if we were practicing in the cafeteria.

"Focus up, everyone. Our next topic is the moons of Saturn."
MJ said holding a piece of paper and stood at the front of the bus.

....
"The second law of thermodynamics."
....
"Frank Sinatra."
....
"Fort Sumter."
....
"Flash is wrong."
....
I looked behind me at flash and smiled.
"Tough day for you isn't it"

"Okay, guys, let's focus. Next one"
MJ said trying to get us back on track

"Michelle, don't overwork them."
....
"Uh, strontium, barium, vibranium."
Peter said, being the only question he answered.

"Very good, Peter. Glad to have you back"
MJ said with a big smile.

"Glad to be back."

MJ bit her lip then looked down at the questions.
Weird...
Peters phone started to ring as MJ was saying a question

"Can I take this real quick? I'll only be a sec."
Peter said walking back to where Ned was sitting.
"Yeah go ahead"

I turned and sat sideways to see what Peter was doing.
Peter: Hello?

"Alright! Focus up, everyone."
MJ said and I chuckled
"I think we should make a drinking game of whenever you say focus or focus up, we drink. By the end of this trip, we might be drunk enough to not remember it"
I said making some of the other laugh. MJ rolled her eyes

"Appropriate jokes only. Y/n, stay on task"
Mr.Harrington said
"Oh that note I'll give you guys a break"
MJ said and sat down.

I stood up and went to the back of the bus where all our big bags were and also near peter and Ned. Eavesdropping is my favorite hobby...

"Look- Happy, I gotta say... you tracking me without my permission is a... complete violation of my privacy."

"That's different."
Peter whispered
Also, why is he talking to happy...
And why is he acting so suspicious

"Nothing. Look, it's just the Academic Decathlon. It's no big deal."

I stood closer to where peter and Ned sat when he hung up.
"I couldn't help but overhear-"
I started to say then sat down in the seat in front of them but faced backward to them.

"Why were you talking to happy"
I whispered. Ned looked at me confused.
Right... he doesn't know.
"He has a tracker on me... did you know that"
I nodded
"Your new, he does that with all newbies"
Peter sighed

"Wait- what do you mean newbies- I'm so confused"
Ned looked at me waiting for an answer.
I looked at peter then ned
"I'll explain another ti-"
I looked down into Ned's lap and he had a hologram of a small map.
"Peter- Ned- what are you doing"

Peter chuckled.
"I'll explain what we're doing when you explain to ned what your doing"
I scoffed then went back to my seat.

At the hotel-
We all separated and went to our rooms to rest and unpack. Tomorrow was the competition so we needed to be as ready as possible.

Mr.Harrington had given me a room with MJ.  It wasn't the worst thing but I wish I could've gotten with someone else.

She sat on her bed reading a book while I took the stuff I was going to need tomorrow out of my bag.

"What's the deal with you and Peter"
I asked her, breaking the ice between us and the silence.

MJ put down her book and shrugged
"I think we both like each other. Why?"

I looked down at my shirts letting her words process.

I looked over at her "just making conversation"

MJ stood up. "Now that you mention it I think I'm gonna kiss him tomorrow. I was going to ask him out but now.."

I looked away from her and down at my hands.
What's wrong with me why am I so upset-

I like peter.

I finally noticed... I really like Peter.

I need my mind off of this...
"Oh hey! Once in a Ted Talk, I heard that rebellious activity before a competition is like good for the team or something"
I said and MJ gasped.
"We should sneak into the pool"

I thought about her idea for a second "I'm kinda hungry though"

We both thought and then I had an idea.
I stood up
"We should raid the vending machine"

MJ and I both got excited.
"I'll tell the group chat our ideas"
"Ok I'll change"

I shuffled through my bag and grabbed my swimsuit. I knew there was a pool here but I didn't think that I'd have to use it.

Everyone was on board with the idea. My plan was working about forgetting about peter.
