I awoke to rays of sun shining into the room, the sound of birds chirping, and the warm breeze of summer. The breeze smelled of freshly cut grass and a river. I smiled as I rolled over. When I did the smile disappeared and was replaced by a frown. Ace wasn't in bed and there wasn't a note like there used to be if woke up alone. I sighed and laid there feeling heartbroken. I thought this was going to be different. The way last night went it seemed like Ace had forgiven me, like things were finally going to start going back to normal. I laid there for what felt like forever before I finally got up. I put my clothes on and left Ace's room. I walked down the hall looking in every open door hoping to see Ace waiting for me, but there was nothing. I walked outside and walked through the garden thinking about how much it hurt waking up alone. Was I just another one of his conquests? Did last night even mean anything to him? He said he still loves me. Did he mean it or was he just trying to trick me into sleeping with him again? I had so many questions running through my mind. I finally found a bench by the pond that was in the backyard and sat there as so many questions and thoughts ran through my head. It felt like I had been sitting there for hours before I heard footsteps behind. I didn't need to look to know who it was, I could smell him. His cologne was intoxicating and addictive. I didn't say anything as he sat down, afraid that if I did I would start to cry. We sat in silence for a bit before either one of us spoke.
"Did you mean it?" I asked when I was finally sure I wouldn't cry, and my voice wouldn't crack.
"Mean what?" Ace asked as we watched the frogs and water bugs in the pond.
"Last night," I said nervously,".... When you said you still love me."
"Yes," Ace said," I know what you're thinking, and the answer is no. You weren't just a conquests and it wasn't an excuse to get you into bed." He made me look at him and his eyes were soft and was full of love. I could feel tears threatening to spill over. He hasn't looked at me like he was right now at all since I got back.
"I really do still love you Clara!" Ace said softly.
"I woke up alone," I said looking away. He sighed.
"I know," Ace said," I had some stuff I had to attend to this morning, and I didn't have time to leave you a note. I'm sorry. I know what I did was wrong, and I should have figured out another way to handle it. Please just give me another chance Clara! I know I don't deserve it, but I love you and I want to spend the rest of our lives making it up to you. Please!" I looked at him. There was desperation and urgency in his eyes.
"You're right," I said," after the stunt you pulled you don't deserve it!"
"I understand," Ace said, and I saw hurt in his eyes.
"But when I married you, I took a vow," I told him," for better or worse. I love you Ace and we have gone through a lot! I don't want to spend the rest of my life wonder what if. I'll give you another chance, but I really do mean it this time when I say this is your last chance! I can't keep playing these games!" He smiled and pulled me onto his lap.
"I promise never again!" Ace said kissing me softly.
"Good," I said snuggling closer to him. We sat in silence enjoying each other's company for the first time in what felt like forever. After a while I broke the silence.
"So, I was walking past your office yesterday," I said playing with my shirt," and I heard you and Kyle talking."
"About?" Ace said sounding a little nervous.
"Your parents," I said looking at him," and some sort of plan you have?" His eyes glazed over, and he frowned.
"You weren't supposed to hear that until I was ready to tell you about it," Ace grumbled.
