After two glasses of wine and four tapas, Pilar and Carmen left the bar, Pilar was meeting with her son and headed down to the restaurant they were due to have lunch at, Carmen slowly wondered down the high street towards home.
After the tapas and wine she wasn't feeling hungry at all so she decided to do a little window shopping, it was just coming up to 2 pm and most of the shops were closing for lunch.
'How different from the UK,' she thought, 'no siesta there!'
She started to think of the Uk, of her ex-husband William and her children, now both living so far away.
She had been so young, not so much in age, she had been twenty four, but in mentality, thinking back she recalled how naive she was. Even though she had suffered the loss of her mother, her grandmother and still felt the emptiness the departure of her brothers had given her, she was still a positive person who truly believed that the world was good and she was going to meet Prince Charming and live happily ever after.
Well, that fateful day, she did meet him. Carmen's best friend Rosa was getting married to an English officer, the wedding was to be held in Gibraltar and she was going to be the bridesmaid.
She remembered the day clearly, she and Rosa were so excited as they got ready and waited for the car to come and drive them the two hour journey to Gibraltar. They both looked beautiful.
As they entered the church Carmen remembered looking up and seeing Rosa's finacee's best man, he was so handsome, and he was looking directly at her!
After the wedding they danced together, had a drink together, well spent the whole day together. And the day after that and the day after that. They were inseparable. William journeyed across to Spain whenever he could and sometimes she would go over to Gibraltar.
Less than a year later Rosa became her bridesmaid and William her husband.
They were to stay married for over sixteen years. The marriage was a mixture of good and bad times. They travelled around the world living in Hong Kong, France, Germany and Cyprus before finally settling in the UK. She became pregnant five times but unfortunately due to miscarriages and complicated births only two girls survived.
The last few years of the marriage were rocky and they decided that they would be happier going their separate ways.
Carmen sighed, even to this day she wondered if she had made the right decision.
