Carmen walked into her apartment and immediately kicked off her shoes. Oh, they may be the most comfortable shoes she had but walking around Malaga all day was just too much.
They had all had a fantastic time, they had visited sights, eaten and drunk, shopped till they dropped and laughed all the way back.
She was so glad she had gone. This is what she needed. New friends and entertainment!
She made herself a coffee and sat back in her armchair picking up her ipad. She hadn't checked through her emails during the last couple of days and wondered if her daughters had emailed her.
As she waited for her mails to load she started thinking of her Aunt. She would have normally run straight to the phone to call her and let her know that she was home safe, it was laughable really but right up until two years ago she still checked in with her Aunt every day at least once by phone and normally also with a visit. They had always been very close but since her Uncle had passed away, peacefully in his sleep and due to old age, her Aunt had needed her more and more.
Then two years ago she had also passed away. There had been a couple of scares, which at the ripe old age of 89 was not surprising, and then one night she had had difficulty breathing. She had gone into hospital and once again Carmen found herself holding her Aunt's hand as she passed away.
Her Aunt was always worried that she would leave Carmen on her own, with no-one close to look after her, so when she had met Rafael, Carmen had taken him to meet her Aunt and they had gotten on really well. Carmen remembered her Aunt's last few words telling her to stay with Rafael, that he was a good man and would look after her. She wondered what her Aunt would think of her now!
Carmen sighed. She had held her Mother's hand, her partner Hans' hand and her Aunt's hands as they passed away. She thought of her eldest brother Pepe, he had passed away quiet a few years previously. He had only been in his early 40's and had died of lung cancer. Cancer seemed to be everywhere.
She started thinking of Rafael.
