Carmen soon arrived home, closed the door behind her and kicked off her shoes. She went into the kitchen and made herself a mug of coffee which she took outside to the terrace, she picked up a magazine from below the table and started flipping through the glossy pages.
The sun was bright and shining down straight into her eyes, so she lowered the awning, sat down and continued to read.
After about an hour she decided to go down and visit her friend Emilia on the fifth floor. She loved Emilia, she was the one person she could say anything to.
Emilia was 93 years old and the most wonderful person you could ever wish to know. She had had a VERY full life herself and sometimes just to sit and listen to her was magical.
'Hello beautiful, I was just about to put on the coffee, come in, come in and sit down,' she said as she opened the door for me and greeted me,
'Here, I brought a couple of pastries,' I announced as I gave her a kiss on the cheek and offered her the tray of goodies I had picked up at the little Danish pastry shop on my way home earlier.
I walked into her immaculate little sitting room and sat down by the terrace door, after a couple of minutes Emilia slowly came into the room with her zimmer frame supporting a tray of two steaming cups of freshly brewed coffee and the small pastries placed on a beautiful silver tray.
'Here you are,' she said putting down the cups and tray, 'Now tell me, what adventures have you had over the last couple of days?'
Carmen told her about meeting up with Pilar, getting the tickets for the trip to Malaga and joining the gym. 'I like going to the Pilates class three times a week, and on the other days I just use the machines, it's fun and gets me out, I meet lots of people' Carmen added.
'Good for you' replied Emilia heartily, 'That's what you need. Are you missing Rafael? Do you think you made the right choice?'
'Oh Emilia, I don't know. Yes I miss him, of course I do, but I also feel free and happy, I don't know,' Carmen repeated, 'I think I'll have to wait and see.'
