Carmen picked up her last piece of toast and slowly glanced down at the early morning swimmers. The sun was starting to get warm already and the young crowd seemed to be having fun splashing around and enjoying their holiday.
Yes, Carmen thought, her early life had not been the happiest. She remembered holding her mother's hand as she had passed away and watching her father walk away leaving the three of them with her grandmother. He just couldn't cope.
Life was very different with her grandmother, she had been used to living in the center of Malaga city and now she was in the countryside helping her grandmother run her corner shop.
But life was good, and the three of them enjoyed a realxed lifestyle.
Unfortunately three years later Carmen remembered her grandmother dying. She had always suffered from diabetes and this finally became too much to handle. Carmen and her two brothers went to live with her Aunt Maria. Maria had not been able to have children of her own so she accepted the three, although now aged 15 Carmen was hardly a child.
Life had been good with her aunt and uncle, they loved her and her brothers dearly and did every thing possible to make sure they were happy.
Shortly after arriving with her aunt, both her brother Pepe and Paco decided to leave Spain and head off to France to join the French Legionaires. Little did she know that cool autumn morning, that her brothers would never return to Spain. From France they made their way to Belgium, met two lovely girls, married and settled in Belgium for the rest of their lives.
Just as she replaced the empty coffee cup on the terrace table the telephone rang and jolted her back to the present.
'Hello' she answered cheerfully down the phone
'Oh Carmen, I'm glad I caught you', answered Pilar, 'Listen, I'm just about to pop out to get the tickets for the Malaga trip tomorrow, have you had time to think about it? will you come?'
'Sure, why not' answered Carmen, 'I'd love to, shall I meet you and we can get the tickets together?'
'Yes, that's a great idea, then we can catch up over a glass of wine'
'Sounds like fun, give me half an hour and I'll meet you at the square'
'Ok. see you there. Byee'
Carmen put the phone down and quickly started tidying up her breakfast things, good, she needed to go out. The last thing she wanted to do was to stay in on her own reminiscing all day.
