"What are you doing on the floor?" Mike rushed to your side, kneeling next to you.
"We broke up." You sobbed, laying on the cold floor.
"You should be celebrating, not crying miserably on the floor." He joked, only to receive a punch on his arm.
"Can you respect my sorrow? I'm having a hard time here." You finally looked up at him and his small smile disappeared.
"Right, sorry." He took a deep breath. "Don't you want to go to the couch? It's more comfortable." You nodded and he carried you there. He sat down and placed your head on his lap, playing with your hair while you talked.
"… I don't know what to do without him." You watched as his expression became more serious.
"Don't say that. You are better off without him. He was a total jerk from the beginning, he never deserved you. You are the most precious human being I know and you deserve someone that treats you right."
"Thanks, Mike. Why can't I find a man like you?" You didn't even realize what you were saying and how stupid you were being. Mike Morton was indeed that type of man you so badly wanted, but the fact that he was your best friend annulled any romantic thought.
"… Maybe he's closer than you think." He sighed, disappointed. "You need to get some sleep. Should I carry you to your bed too?"
"No, I'm feeling better." You got up. "Mike." You stopped him by holding one of his hands. "Stay. Please. I don't want to be alone."
"O-Okay." He smiled.
You guided him to your bedroom and you laid down on the bed, that was big enough to fit both of you. Mike was laying on his back, looking like a rock. You stared at him for a moment, giggling at his nervousness.
"What?" His gaze found yours and he chuckled.
You remained in silence. After building up some courage, you cuddled up to him and almost instantly relaxed. It had been some time since you got to be like that and you realized that you missed it. Maybe more than you should.
After some weeks when you started enjoying your single life, an unpleasant reminder came up. There was this trip that you had already paid for. You would go to the beach with your boyfriend and Mike, staying in the same apartment. However, you weren't planning on canceling it. You needed some time to relax and that was the perfect opportunity, even though the idea of spending a week with your ex wasn't exactly relaxing. But perhaps you could work things out and be friends or… something more. Again.
You went with Mike in his car. Jacob, your ex, would get there later. When you were looking around the apartment, another unpleasant reminder: there were only two rooms. Of course, you were still dating when you booked it, so you and Jacob were supposed to share a room.
"There's no way I'm sleeping with him." You said, looking at the double bed.
"I can sleep on the couch and you take the bed." Mike suggested.
"You are not sleeping on the couch. We could share the bed if you are comfortable with it."
"Yeah, sure." He played cool, following you into the bedroom.
After you ended organizing everything, Jacob showed up. You didn't know how to act around him, so you only gave him an awkward greeting and hid in the kitchen.
"Are you feeling okay?" Mike asked, worried about you.
"I don't know." You leaned on the counter. "It's just weird."
"I know." He rubbed your back. "You will get over him."
"Hopefully." You ran one hand through your hair. "Let's go to the beach. Maybe we can find some cute faces there."
