It was already past 9 PM and your boyfriend was nowhere to be seen. You had been sitting on that chair for nearly one and a half hours, the waiter had asked for your order five tines and you always said that you were waiting for someone. You were starting to think that everybody in that restaurant was finding you delusional for waiting for a boyfriend that apparently didn't exist. But he existed and his name was Jose Baden.
You had been dating Jose for three years. You met him in a bar while you were hanging out with a friend. He was the first person you noticed there: he was good-looking, charming, and very attractive. Your friend was the one who convinced you to talk to him and you did it. It all started as a one-night stand, but you just couldn't be away from each other. You met him in that same bar a lot of times, always claiming that it wasn't a big deal, it was not like you were dating anyway. However, you started dating. After he confessed, you had a big fight because you knew that he had a reputation. He was a ladies' man and you didn't know if you could trust him in a relationship. You had had bad experiences with those types of men before and you didn't want to fall into the same mistake. He promise you he was going to be everything you wanted and needed, he promised he would be the best boyfriend you could ever have, but as you sat alone in that restaurant you started to think if he was telling the truth. Although you didn't want to be suspicious of him, it was hard not to wonder where he was and what he was doing that was more important than you. He didn't even pick up your calls."I'm tired. If you hear that message, please don't even try to find me, at least you have a very good excuse." You said to the phone.
You went back home. He didn't even try to contact you while you were crying on your bed. Despite you asking him not to come to you, you waited for a call, you waited for your doorbell to ring, but nothing happened.
On the next morning, you woke up almost at lunchtime. You looked at your phone: no messages. You started to get worried. What if something had happened to him and you were judging him badly? While you were thinking if you should go to his apartment or not, your phone rang. It was him. It meant that he was alive, but what if he was kidnapped? You decided to answer it, but didn't say anything, just waited for him to start explaining."I know you are mad at me, but I can explain." He always started the conversation like that. "I was feeling really sick last night, so-"
"Couldn't you even text me?"
"I was on bed all night, my phone wasn't with me and I couldn't-"
"Always the same excuse." You interrupted him again. "Can't you be creative at least?"
"Look, I'm really, really sorry-"
" 'and I promise I will make it up to you'. See? Always the same excuse, always the same false promise. Why can't you just say the truth once? I can't get it anymore, Jose." The tears were already running down your cheeks.
"Don't cry, please. I will go to your house, okay?"
"Okay." You sighed.
You waited for him to show up. He took a while but appeared at your front door.
"I'm sorry." He tried to hug you, but you stopped back.
"Don't." You closed the door. "I just want you to know that I only accepted you coming here because I think we need to discuss what is happening."
"I can explain."
"Can you tell me the truth this time?"
"I really was sick, I wasn't lying."
"How am I supposed to believe this? How do you always get sick on the day we have dates?"
"I don't know-"
