Three days later, Nick and Hayley were back home in Florida. Hayley was in bed, resting. Nick was taking care of her, bringing her what she wanted. He cooked her breakfast and lunch and snack. He brought her some celery sticks with peanut butter. He sat on the bed.
"Better?" Nick asked.
"Much, thank you, for taking care of me," Hayley said.
"It's part of the job as the husband, I'm not only taking care of you, I'm taking care of our babies," Nick said rubbing her stomach.
"I still can't believe we are having twins," Hayley said.
"Twins run in my family," Nick said.
"I know, but I wasn't expecting us to have twins," Hayley said.
"Me either," Nick said. She put her food on the nightstand and pulled him close and kissed him softly. Nick deepened the kiss. He rested his forehead against hers.
"I love you, Nick," Hayley said.
"I love you, too, baby," Nick said. She put her hand on her stomach and grabbed his hand and put it on her stomach.
"Kicking up a storm," Hayley said.
"Yup," Nick said.
Three months later, Hayley was eight months along. She was in bed when Brian and Leighanne came in. She smiled.
"Hey guys," Hayley said.
"Hey, Nick said you were in bed," Brian said sitting down. Leighanne sat down.
"Yeah, he wants me to stay comfortable and rest, Dr. Kelly said the same thing, being pregnant with twins, it's safe to not move around a lot," Hayley said.
"Well, we have some news, Leighanne's three months pregnant," Brian said. Hayley smiled and hugged Leighanne.
"Congratulations, guys, must have been some honeymoon," Hayley said.
"The doctor said I conceived the first night," Leighanne said. Hayley laughed.
"Wow," Hayley said.
"Didn't the doctor say the same for you and Nick," Brian said.
"I think so," Hayley said. She suddenly put her hand on her stomach.
"Hayley," Brian said.
"Hospital, something's wrong," Hayley said. Brian helped her up. Leighanne ran down and got Nick. They came up and Nick helped Brian get Hayley out to the car. Leighanne grabbed Nick's keys and locked up the house and they went to the hospital. Hayley was taken to a room where Dr. Kelly came in and checked her.
"Hayley, you're in labor," Dr. Kelly said.
"It's early," Hayley said.
"I know, but you are," Dr. Kelly said. Hayley screamed out in pain.
"Something's wrong," Hayley cried. Dr. Kelly looked at Nick.
"Nick, I need you to go wait in the waiting room, I'll come out when I know something," Dr. Kelly said. Nick kissed Hayley and went out to the waiting room. Brian and Leighanne stood up.
"Nick," Brian said.
"Better call the gang, it's serious, she screamed in pain, Dr. Kelly sent me out here," Nick said. Leighanne went to call everyone. Nick sat down and held his head in his hands.
"I'm scared, Frick, my wife needs me and I can't be with her," Nick said.
"Dr. Kelly will find out what's wrong," Brian said.
"Everyone is coming," Leighanne said.
Dr. Kelly came out. Nick stood up to meet her.
"What's going on," Nick said.
"We have to operate and get the babies out, Nick, we will do everything we can, I'll come out afterwards," Dr. Kelly said.
"I want to be with her, she needs me," Nick said.
"Nick, I'm sorry, its best you wait out here with your friends, Hayley will be fine, we won't let anything happen to her," Dr. Kelly said. She went back down the hall. Nick sat down.
"Hayley needs me, I know it," Nick said.
"The doctors will take care of her," Brian said. They heard footsteps and saw AJ, Alicia, and Howie coming towards them. Brian told them what was going on. Alicia sat next to Nick and hugged him. Nick hugged her.
"Kevin and Kristin are on the plane now, they should be here in a couple hours, my mom's meeting them at the airport, I'd better call her with an update," AJ said. He went to call Denise.
"Nick," Alicia said.
"My wife needs me, Ali, they won't let me be with her," Nick said crying. Alicia hugged him and rubbed his back.
"The doctors probably think you'll be in the way," Alicia said.
Two hours later, Nick was pacing the room. Kevin and Kristin arrived. Kevin went to Nick and hugged him.
"I'm scared, Kev," Nick said. Kevin held his 'little brother'.
"The doctors will take care of her, Nick," Kevin said.
"I love her so much, Kev, I can't live without her," Nick said.
"I don't think anyone can," Kevin said. Nick held onto his 'older brother'. Dr. Kelly came out. Nick went to her. Kevin stood behind him.
"Well?" Nick asked.
"Hayley is going to be fine," Dr. Kelly said.
"What about the babies?" Nick asked.
"There was complications, I'm sorry, Nick, the babies were stillborn," Dr. Kelly said.
"What! Why couldn't you save them!" Nick cried.
"Nick, we did everything we could, Hayley did everything she was suppose to do, she had lots of rest, didn't get stressed, it wasn't anyone's fault, these things happen, I'm sorry, Nick, we all wanted them to survive," Dr. Kelly said. She went back down the hall. Nick sank to his knees and cried. Brian knelt down and hugged him. Nick cried on his shoulder.
An hour later, Nick was sitting beside Hayley's bed, holding her hand. Dr. Kelly came in and checked her.
"She'll be waking up soon, she doesn't know yet," Dr. Kelly said.
"This will kill her," Nick said quietly.
"Not if you let it happen, Nick," Dr. Kelly said. Hayley stirred and opened her eyes. She looked and saw Nick and Dr. Kelly.
"Nick," Hayley said.
"I'm here, honey," Nick said kissing her hand. He got up beside her and helped her sit up and held her close to him.
"What's going on?" Hayley asked. Dr. Kelly stepped forward. Brian, Leighanne, AJ, Alicia, Kevin, Kristin, and Howie came in. Alicia went on the other side of Hayley's bed and held her other hand. Hayley looked at everyone and noticed tears in their eyes.
"Hayley," Dr. Kelly said.
"What," Hayley said.
"I'm afraid I have some bad news," Dr. Kelly said.
"Bad news, what is it, oh god, my babies, what happened?" Hayley asked.
"We got the babies out, Hayley, I'm sorry, they were stillborn," Dr.Kelly said.
"What!" Hayley cried.
"I'm sorry, Hayley, we did everything we could, they didn't make it," Dr. Kelly said.
"Oh god no!" Hayley cried. Nick held her close as she cried against his chest.
"I'm sorry, you guys, I did everything I could," Dr. Kelly said.
"We know, Dr. Kelly," Nick said. Dr. Kelly left the room. Everyone gathered around the bed.
