I felt a hand through my hair, waking me up in the process. "Wake up Lou", the voice whispered into my ear, her breath tickling me. I opened my eyes to see the beautiful brunette that I was lucky enough to call my girlfriend. She giggled as I closed my eyes again, just wanting five more minutes before the day had to start. She kissed my forehead before pulling the covers off my body and exposing my bare torso. "Come on baby, it's time to get up now." The air was cold against my skin, and I grabbed her hand and pulled her towards me, feeling the mattress spring slightly when she landed on top of me. I held her there, enjoying the warmth of her body and the sweet smell of her hair. Nobody said anything for a few minutes as we just enjoyed the stillness of the moment. I loved mornings like these. Mornings where I could wake up with her and it felt like we were the only people in the world. I felt her hand squeeze mine as she lifted her head up slightly to look into my eyes. "What shall we do today?" she asked, waiting for my response. I thought for a moment before I found myself smiling at the beautiful girl in front of me.
"We could go ice skating?" I suggested, continuing to smile as her face lit up at the thought. She squealed slightly as she jumped off the bed, running over to her wardrobe to find some clothes. I followed behind her, pulling a red and white striped top out of the drawer to wear alongside my black jeans. I glanced over at the window, noticing that the sky was grey, and deciding to wear my favourite grey jumper. She hummed to herself whilst picking out her outfit and moving to the dresser to fix her hair. I found myself leaning against the side of the door, admiring how naturally beautiful she was. She caught me staring and stuck her tongue out at me, forcing a small chuckle to leave my lips as I turned to leave the room. After brushing my teeth and sorting my hair, I made my way downstairs to find her sitting on the sofa, waiting for me. I grabbed my shoes and coat and headed for the door, excited about what the day would bring.
The chill of the ice rink hit me instantly. We held hands as we took our first tentative steps on the ice, careful not to slip straight away. I had always enjoyed the freedom of skating, but that didn't mean I was any good at it. After a few minutes of trying to get the hang of it we became more confident, letting go of each other's hands. Every time I looked at her I could see the concentration on her face as she pushed one skate in front of the other, gliding along the ice. I had to fight to keep up with her. I could feel my cheeks going red as the cold air hit my face and I wished I had brought a hat to keep my ears warm. We went round and round the rink, laughing every time one of us tripped over. It was a Saturday afternoon in the middle of January, but the rink wasn't too busy, just a few families, friends and couples. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I felt a pair of arms snake their way around my waist, pulling me in. I spun around, facing the girl I hoped to marry one day. I crouched my head slightly, making myself the perfect height to kiss her. As my hand held the back of her head, I found myself getting lost in the kiss, enjoying the way our lips moved in unison. I had been with this girl for so many years, but I could never get bored of the way it felt when I kissed her. Eventually she pulled away, resting her head against my chest as we just stood in the middle of the ice enjoying each other's company. "I love you, El," I said softly, feeling her squeeze me tighter.
"I love you too, Lou," she replied, reaching up to peck my cheek.
After an hour or so of getting more and more confident I found myself attempting to show off and impress my girlfriend. Some failed attempts at jumps and balancing on one leg later, I decided to skate backwards. I turned around, facing Eleanor, watching a smile grow on her lips. She shook her head at me, rolling her eyes and giggling as I pushed off. Within a few seconds her face changed from a smile to a worried expression as I lost my balance, stumbling backwards, not able to keep my feet on the ice. I fell backwards, falling into the body of someone else and knocking them down too. The last thing I heard was a scream as my head hit the cold, hard surface of the ice and I lost my vision.
