The cut still burned on Zak's arm, Zak tried not to focus on the pain but it keep bothering him. The thinner patches of blood had dried but the bigger bits still remained wet and sticky. The dark, boney hands were still following them on their journey to the balcony. Nick had gotten a scrape on his ankle from the claws, but otherwise he remained unharmed.
The two rushed down the hallway and into a random door, there were a few doors on this floor, unlike the last which just had one. Nick slammed the door behind them and saw what they had walked into. It seemed to be an abandoned bedroom, that looked suspiciously how Darryl's looked back where they lived.
Zak and Nick stared at the bedroom, in awe of how close it resembled Darryl's room. They had never gotten around to cleaning the real one out, their grief blinded them from doing anything productive. Darryl's real room had began to collect dust and you would begin to cough just from the amount of dry dust in the air.
Nick leaned against the door to the bedroom and Zak was slumped on the floor. The two took a few deep breaths then glanced at each other. With a nod from Zak, Nick opened the bedroom door and they bolted out into the hallway.
The scratching of the hands crawling along the floor grew closer, their flashlights bobbed up and down as then ran. No matter how much they sprinted down the dark halls, they still kept going on and on. Something magical was definitely going on when it came to this house, but the two couldn't exactly pin what was happening.
The sound of the claws creeping up behind them faded, signaling they were safe for now. Zak slowly shined his phone light around the hallway, searching for the shadow again. Zak spotted the shadow and called Nick to look.
The two made a sort of eye contact with the shadow, it smiled at then and waved. It was a creepy smile, one that you could only describe as a smile someone mentally unstable would wear. The demon tail on the shadow flicked back and forth as the shadow still stayed in view of the flashlight.
Suddenly, the shadow flipped it's hood down, the horns and tail on it disappeared. It now just looked like a normal human silhouette, a very familiar human silhouette... Zak gasped and put his hand over his mouth, realizing who it was, Zak tried to hold back his tears but couldn't.
Nick glanced at Zak who was crying for what seemed to be no apparent reason. Nick looked at the now human shadow and wondered why Zak was crying. It took a few more moments to figure it out but then it clicked.
"Darryl..." Nick whispered, the shadow smiled and gave a small nod at them. While the two were still shocked about the shadows identity, Darryl slipped out of view of the light. The scratching of the claws came back and Zak whipped his head towards them.
Zak tapped Nick on the shoulder quickly and pointed at the darkness coming for them. Zak was still speechless about Darryl, so Nick grabbed Zak's bad arm and pulled him along. Zak squirmed in Nick's grip to get him to let go of his injury, Nick obliged and let go.
Zak kept up in pace with Nick and the two ran further away from the claws. Darryl slipped along beside them in the darkness, watching them run away from his very own shadows. Nick tried to have the pieces of the puzzle click in his head, but nothing seemed to go together. Nick concentrated more on what evidence he had.
The pieces then clicked in Nick's head, his eyes went wide as he ran down the hall with Zak. Darryl could control the shadows, and he'a trying to kill us for some reason... Nick thought to himself, happy of his discovery.
"Zak." Nick said to the person next to him.
"Yeah?" Zak said through heavy pants.
"I think Darryl is a ghost that's trying to kill us..." Nick said trying to keep his breathing steady. Zak stopped in his tracks and ignored the scratching of the claws.
"Zak?!" Nick yelled as he skidded to a stop a few feet ahead. "What are you doing?!" Nick called behind him.The claws crept up to Zak, fear was in his eyes, he could only hope that if it was Darryl he could reason with him. The hands were about to grip Zak's ankle but he stopped them for a moment.
"Darryl!" Why are you doing this?!" Zak yelled at the darkness. He got no response, but the hands recoiled for a little.
"Darryl just... let us go, come back home with us. We could all be happy together as roommates again!" Zak said with tears now threatening to spill again. With that the claws went to grab Zak's injured arm, where he was weak.
"Darryl we can just be happy all together like it used to be! Just let us leave here..." Zak said and fell to the floor when trying to back away from the claws.Nick saw that Zak had fell down when trying to reason with their dead friend. Nick ran and quickly pulled Zak to his feet. The two ran further down the hall then saw a small amount of light coming from about 100 feet away. The scratching of the claws still lingered behind them, having not gone away for the past few minutes.
They got to the light and saw it was a window.
"We must be near the edge of the house if there's a window!" Nick said happily to Zak, stating the near obvious. Zak nodded then followed Nick who was going to the left of the window. There it was, the balcony, it's large double doors taunting them from the other end of the hall. As soon as they saw the balcony the scratching seemed to get closer... and faster... the two ignored the danger approaching them and ran with all the energy they had left. As they neared the door the claws tried to grasp their ankles and drag them down.
The hands failed at grabbing them so they sped up to reach the door. As Zak and Nick were about 20 feet away from the door, the dark hands and tendrils covered the entire door, blocking them from opening it.
Nick and Zak both pulled on the door, there was no escape... That was until Zak realized how one of them could get out, but just one.
"Darryl!" Zak called out, hoping that his plan would work. Zak shined his flashlight on a near wall and the ghost of Darryl came into view. Zak took a deep breath and mentally prepared what he was going to say.
"Darryl, I get it, you're lonely you want us to be with you! You miss us. If you just came home with us it wouldn't be the same as what you wanted." Zak started, then took a deep breath for the closing of his small monologue.
"Take me Darryl, just let Nick go..." Zak finished, the shadow that represented Darryl paused for a moment then gave a sad smile.
"Zak no..." Nick spoke, in shock of what Zak had just said to Darryl. The hands began to back away from the door, but then started to grasp Zak's ankles. Zak winced in pain as the claws began to rip into his clothes and flesh. Nick swiftly pulled the doors open, then went to grab Zak's hand to pull him away.
"Nick, I'm sorry, but Darryl needs someone and you have too many other good friends that you would loose." Zak said then smiled at Nick with a mix of happy and sad tears in his eyes.Nick walked to the door frame with tears clouding his vision, he glanced back at Zak and tears began to stream down his face. He watched as Zak tried so hard to hold back his scream of pain, the claws were ripping into his hoodie and drawing blood.
Nick had to look away to spare his mind from the gory details, but he didn't want to leave Zak behind. Before Nick could step away from the house on his own, the door slammed shut behind him and he was thrown to the lawn outside.
Nick landed with a soft thud on the grass, his body ached and he didn't have the energy to stand up. It took a few moments to register what had just happened, but it finally settled.
Nonstop tears started to run down Nick's face, he had not only lost Darryl a year ago, but now had also lost Zak. Nick looked up for a moment and saw something in the early morning light. It was two human silhouettes holding on to each other, the one on the left had a happy smile on it's face and a large hoodie on, the one on the right had a sad smile and tall, puffy hair. The two silhouettes were waving at Nick, smiling together, Nick's tears continued to fall. They were quite literally best friends forever, neither of them would be lonely, Nick managed to smile through his tears and feel happy for them. He used his now weakened limbs to get up and saw the haunted house was gone, the shadows stopped waving at Nick and disappeared to go on their own.
