Heyyy! So this chapter is super important because it starts shaping the way the rest of the book is going to go! I really like these next few chapters and I hope that you do too!
Eve's POV:
I wake up to the smell of cinnamon. I walk out of the guest room and head down stairs, and to my surprise it's not Harry cooking, but Sam. I sit down on the bar stool, confused as to why Sam is in Harry's house.
"Sam? What are you doing here? Where's Harry?" I ask as I'm handed a glass of orange juice. "He told me to bring you a pair of clothes and to be here when you woke up so you weren't alone." She tells me, putting a piece of French toast on my plate.
"What is he doing?" I ask, still confused. Sam walks towards the living room and points towards the TV. Harry is on a morning show, and he is getting interviewed as we speak. Sam turns up the volume so we can hear what he's saying.
"So Harry, how is the tour going so far?" the interviewer asks. "It's going really well! I'm having loads of fun. The fans have been amazing." he tells her.
"I'm sure it's been hard to be away from your girlfriend with all of this traveling. How do you both manage that?" she asks, making my stomach drop. I just realized we never went public about it.
Sam looks over at me, and I look at her. We both brace ourselves for what he is going to say. He looks nervous, which makes me nervous.
"Well it's been difficult, but we make it work. Visiting each other, calling each other, constant constant contact is key." he says, making my ears turn red.
"Did he just-" Sam starts to ask, but I stop her and turn up the volume even more.
"That's so sweet. I'm sure you both are enjoying this short time you have in LA right now." she goes on. "Definetitly." he says, forcing a smile.
"Well tell us about the song you chose to sing today, I heard you changed it is that correct? You were originally going to sing Sign of the Times?" she pushes.
My heart stops. He better not sing what I think he's going to sing. He would do that. Right?
His cheeks turn red. He really is going to sing what I think he's going to sing. "Uh yeah it's called Carolina, and it's a song that I have found to be really personal to me, and even though it's not a ballad, it helped me get so much off my chest when I first wrote it, and I know it's a fan favorite, so I decided to sing it today." he explains.
"Great! Let's hear it!" the interviewer says as Harry and the band get situated on the little stage.
He clears his throat, waits a second, and then he says something that to a random person would seem like nonsense, but to me it was a message. A message saying that he understands where we stand.
"Here's to not knowing." he says, looking straight into the camera, like he knows I'm watching.
The music starts and he begins singing, and my heart shatters, hearing the song he wrote for me when we first met. I can tell Sam notices, and her curiosity gets the best of her.
"Does that mean anything to you?" she asks, looking over at me as I focus on the TV. "It means everything to me." I tell her, a smile escaping my lips.
At that moment I knew everything was going to be okay. Eventually things would go back to normal, Harry and I will be okay again, and we will write some more amazing music together. No weirdness. Just us.
As I listen to Harry's voice, I'm still a little confused. Why did he say we were still dating? Why didn't he just clear the air? Then it registers.
"He better not have done what I think he did." I say under my breath as I pull out my phone and start to dial a phone number. "What? Harry? What did he do?" Sam asks, watching me bring my phone up to my ear.
"Not Harry. Jeff." I tell her as the line rings. The line rings for forever until it eventually goes to voicemail. "Crap." I say as I end the phone call. "Guess I'll just have to wait for them to get back." I tell Sam, who gave up trying to understand what I'm talking about and is focusing on Harry.
I change clothes, help Sam clean the kitchen, and we talk about the night before. I had to stop her from spraying whipped cream on me after I told her about the kiss. Even though she looked happy, I could tell she was sad that Harry and I were over, but she knew it was for the best.
About two hours after the show I hear Harry come through the front door. He walks into the living room to where Sam and I are, and he sinks into the couch sitting between us, letting his curls fall over his eyes.
Sam lets out a laugh then looks at me. "Should I ask or do you want to do the honors?" she asks, making me laugh. "I'll do it." I respond.
I look down at Harry who is sitting in between me and Sam. "It was Jeff, wasn't it." I ask him, already knowing the answer. He looks up at me and nods. "He says a breakup isn't good for my career right now, so he wants us to pretend we're dating for a while longer." he says, his voice trailing off at the end.
While I'm mad I wasn't told about this, I'm not surprised. I wasn't thinking about his career when I ended things, but I was hoping everything would just fizzle out. I guess not. The next step is deciding if I'm actually going to do it. If I said no, that could be bad for Harry and even though we aren't on the best of terms right now, I don't want that for him. If I say yes, however, things could get messy. So freaking messy. But then again when are they not.
"Eve you can choose to do whatev-" I cut him off. "I'll do it. Even though it's not my fault that we went sideways, I still take some of the blame for our relationship ending, so I'll do it. But I have rules. PDA only when necessary, but we have to have some sort of code for when we're out in public. Other than that we are just two exes who work together. Got it?" I ask, hoping he understands.
"Yeah, of course. I just want to make sure you are 100% on board with this. I don't want you to do anything you are uncomfortable with." he assures me.
"I'll be fine. I promise. It'll be a good way for us to write." I respond.
"Are you two sure this is a good idea? Something is inevitably going to happen between you guys and things are just going to get a lot worse." Sam warns us. "That's what the rules are for. If we follow them, then we should be fine." I tell her, hoping I'm right.
"Anyways, he wants us to go out in public and walk around later today, are you free?" he asks. I can tell he is nervous about this, and if I'm being honest, I am too. But for some odd reason that I can't explain, I feel like I have to do this.
"Yeah, I think so." I say as Sam and I get off the couch. "Pick me up at work?" I ask, realizing how busy it's going to be at the record store today. "Yeah, I'll see you later." He says as we walk out of the house.
Sam looks at me passive aggressively. "It'll be fine Sam. It can't get any worse than anything that has happened so far." I tell her, letting out a chuckle. We get in her car and head to the record store.
She drops me off, and I pass by the group of screaming fans, opening the door and letting them in, all of them racing to the stand where Harry's album is. I get the usual questions about Harry, and ones about our relationship. It's weird having to lie to them.
The day goes by slowly. I fiddle around with the piano a little bit, but nothing good comes from it. I organize the shelves, put away receipts, and then just walk around aimlessly around the store, waiting for the time to pass by. Soon enough I hear tire tracks and see Harry pull up in front of the store.
