Time flew by so fast like a whoosh and before you could say jack robinson, today marked the day Humaira and Maryam will officially start attending university.
"Habibty have you packed everything?"
"What about your cardigans? You know winter is soon nearing right?"
"I hope you didn't forget any essential thing?"
"Ya ilahi calm down Ammi. I haven't forgotten a thing, you're just being on edge about me leaving and it's understandable. But mind you, I'm not leaving forever. Just a call away so please relax." Humaira eased guiding her to sit on the bed.
"She's right Ammi habibty, you don't need to worry all will be fine In sha Allah." Maryam added softly patting her on the back. She came just an hour ago to help Humaira round up her packing which was just a finishing touch and from here they would branch to her house for Humaira to thank her father again and say their final goodbyes.
"But it's only natural for me to worry you know. This is Humaira's first time leaving the house to go to a place she has never been before. And that too for years of studying." Worry masked Ammi's expression.
"Do you trust me Ammi?"
"Yes I do."
"Then as I've said you shouldn't worry yourself about this. I'll be there to take care of your little Maira evey step of the way I promise, In sha Allah." Maryam reassured with a smile on her face.
"I know but_"
"Please Ammi don't make this more harder for me than it is already. Just like you don't want me to go, I also want the same but you see I have to. It's the only way your little princess can achieve her dreams okay?" Humaira cupped her cheeks getting misty-eyed. Since yesterday, Ammi has been constantly getting edgy about her departure and it hasn't been easy for her.
"Okay then...as you say. May Allah bless and protect you both for me." She muttered begrudgingly.
"Ameen amin. Now that's my Ammi. Thank goodness for technology I can speak with you every single day on the phone In sha Allah. Plus it's not like I'm staying there for the entire 4 years. I'll visit home whichever chance I get be it mid semester or semester breaks. And as Maryam has said, she'll be there with me everytime." Humaira embraced her tightly, followed by a smooch on the forehead.
"Ammi what about Goggo jidde? I don't want her to try anything nasty like she did the other day while I'm not around." Humaira spoke anxiously, feeling as anger was slowly radiating in her by remembering the day's incident.
"Look who told me not to worry, worrying." Ammi playfully glared at her.
"Ammiiiii." She whined.
"Calm down habibty. Do you think after the scolding she got from your gran she'll try anything of that sort again? I know she won't because she fears and respects her mother too much for that."
"I really hope your instinct is right."
"Okay so let's hurry and finish packing up as you know from Katsina to Abuja is a 4 hours journey and it's almost 3PM now. By the way, Mallam Habibu is patiently waiting for us in the car." Maryam chirped in.
"Oh yes Mairo! You're right, we don't have all day to waste." Humaira replied hastily and went into the bathroom to get her toiletries while Maryam zipped up her bags for her.
They finished packing everything in less than 10 minutes and got set for the trip. Maryam bid her final adios to Ammi and she pulled her in for a hug wishing her all the best. Humaira who was lagging behind all this while dreading this very moment came forward.
