Incomplete: Eight.
I heard the door begin to open, and i shoved the keys back into Lyssa's bag in a panic. It wasn't Lyssa who was coming in, though.
"What's up, mom?" I asked as she looked around the room.
"Where's your friend?" She asked skeptically.
"She just went to go to the bathroom," i shrugged. "She'll be back in a bit, and then we'll get started on everything." She still wouldn't leave. "Do you need something?"
She eyed me carefully before shaking her head. "I just came to check on you," she said simply. Then she glanced around the room and glared at me. "Just because your friend isn't here at this exact moment, doesn't mean you can slack off." She motioned towards the computer. "Go on. Get started on your work. You don't need this Lyssa girl there to hold your hand - it's just homework, after all."
Lyssa walked in the doorway just then. My mom turned around to face her.
"Hello there, Mrs. Kincaid," Lyssa smiled brightly at her.
My mom seemed taken aback for a second before regaining her composure. "Hello, Lyssa." Again, she motioned towards the computer. "Auden was just about to get started on her English assignment. Obviously, she couldn't do it without you here, so i would hope you would stick around so she can finish."
Lyssa seemed to shrink under her hateful gaze. I stood up in a rage.
"Mom, you can't talk to her like that! She's just here to help me out!" I yelled, grabbing her shoulder and whipping her around to face me.
She put her arms up defensively. "I'm just repeating what you told me," she said, not looking me in the eyes.
"One, i never said that. And two, that doesn't give you any excuse to talk to my friend that way! If you have a problem here, take it up with me." I stared daggers. Her eyes shifted easily into place with mine.
We had a bit of a staring contest for a while before Lyssa intervened.
"We should really get started on our work," she giggled. Probably trying to lift the mood. "My dad'll kill me if i go home with nothing. So? Auden?" She looked at me eagerly.
I broke eye-contact with my mom and turned to look at Lyssa with a small smile playing at my lips. "Well, we wouldn't want that, now would we. Let's get started."
I motioned my mom to the door, and she left quickly. Then i sat down with the Mac on my lap and opened my document from before.
"...What was that for?" Lyssa asked, sounding slightly hurt.
"What was what for?" I asked, not looking at her. I was scrolling through the two page's of work i already had complete.
"You guys got into a pretty nasty fight because of me," she said. I looked at her to see she was staring at her lap. My heart broke a little inside.
I stood up, putting the Mac on the bed. Then i walked over and sat down next to her, wrapping my arm around her shoulder and rubbing her back. I tilted my head down so i could see her face. She had tears forming in her eyes.
"I'm sorry," I said soothingly. "I shouldn't have brought you into that at all. Me and my mom just don't get along, and i used you as an excuse to fight with her," I lied easily, and i smiled as Lyssa looked up at me. "I'm really sorry. Will you forgive me?" The truth was much more complicated to explain to her.
