"MORNING, BABY."
Aura smiled at Grandma Ruby as she walked out of her room.
She managed to tame her wild hair with her straightener before running into anyone, so now her initial bad mood was simmering down. After spending a night getting wet by the stupid leak, her hair started defying gravity, and she was not having it. She almost cursed the whole house out with her horrible hair, but she fixed it.
"How was your night? Sleep well?" Grandma Ruby asked as Aura opened the fridge to find something to eat for breakfast.
"Still a little jet-lagged, so I'll make sure to fix my sleeping schedule in the next few days. Otherwise, it was fine, Grandma." She smiled softly, not wanting to stress the elderly woman unnecessarily.
"How long was that flight of yours again?" She asked, frowning as Aura took out the sliced bread and a single egg.
"Gosh, like six hours," Aura replied, shuddering at the memory of having to sit down in such a cramped space beside her parents. She pretended to sleep the entire time. The only time she communicated with her parents was to tell them she needed space to go to the bathroom. Other than that, she put on her sleeping mask over her eyes and let Lacey Redd's music fill her ears. That probably didn't make her feel any better, but she preferred it than speaking to her parents.
"No wonder those two are still out like a light," Grandma Ruby said, pointing back to the hallway. Aura sighed in relief. It was just her with her grandmother. She didn't need to put her guard up for a while.
"You're probably tired too. Why don't you take the day to rest by the beach? There are some pretty good spots close to the beach clubs."
Aura stopped seasoning her egg to ponder over the idea. She turned towards her grandmother, who had a hand on her hip as she leaned by the table, smirking at Aura. It was like she knew what Aura was thinking.
"That's not such a bad idea, Grandma," she said.
"You know what else ain't bad? The cuties you see on the shore." Grandma Ruby winked suggestively.
"Grandma!" Aura exclaimed. Shocked chuckles escaped her lips as she waited for her egg to cook in the pan. "You got a little someone, hm?" She asked.
"Oh, honey! Those days are over for me. After Isaac, I said no more men." Grandma Ruby twiddled with the gold charm on her necklace. "He was the love of my life. No one can compete with him."
"I wish I could've met him."
Aura knew her grandfather had suffered a tragic end. He went out one night with his siblings when they visited town. They were on their way back when a few realized they forgot to bring something from the convenience store. Grandpa Isaac said he'd walk his sister, Lisa, back home since she desperately needed to use the restroom and come back to make sure they were alright. The plan was set, so they went on their way. However, during their walk, a man threw himself over Lisa. Grandpa Isaac threw himself over the man in an attempt to fight him off. Unfortunately, the man was armed.
Both siblings died that day.
"Yeah, I wish a lot of things, but it doesn't change the outcome." Grandma Ruby fiddled with her gold charm one last time before pointing at the egg. "It's gonna burn, baby."
Aura jumped into action, earning chuckles from her grandmother.
When she was half-way done with her breakfast, her parents decided to join them. Instantly, Aura's stomach started doing flips. She feared her breakfast would soon make a reappearance if she didn't get out of there sooner.
