Sometimes life offers us second chances

Most times we are too oblivious to notice them.

In my case, I was oblivious

I was what you will call...

Stupid. In. Love.

*~*~*~*~*

I watched as the guy I had fantasized on for years—when I first saw his pictures on Zinny's phone—walked past me like I didn't exist after hugging his sister and giving me a quick hi.

Just hi?!

There's something about me and sometimes it's good other times...well let's leave those times.

I'm the kind of girl that every guy is bound to notice, it's a necessity in my life for you to notice me.

I mean why not?

That's how it has always been since day one and I'm so used to the feeling I get when people notice how beautiful I am.

It's not being cocky it's having high self-esteem.

I made it my mission to make him notice me because I can't be crushing on him all these years and crush in vain.

That doesn't mean I don't love Chika I still do and I will try and call him soon.

"Steve, I thought you said you're coming back next week?" Zinny asked from the kitchen while I made myself comfortable on the floor munching on the bananas and groundnut he came back with.

What? I'm hungry.

"Aah! In my lodge kwa!!" he exclaimed eying Zinny suspiciously.

I turned and gave him a good look. He was good looking in an African way. He was dark in complexion, the type we call black beauty with his naturally red lips—I knew because it didn't look too bleached like most people who use treatment—and his lean shape.

"How na? It's only question why are you taking it seriously?" Zinny asked with a frown.

I ignored them not wanting to contribute because I was too busy enjoying this banana.

My love for bananas.

"I'm suspecting you oo," her brother stated in a teasing tone.

I decided to butt into the conversation.

"Zinny, are you sure you don't have anyone you were planning on inviting over?" I asked with humor glinting in my eyes.

Zinny glared at me, "Shut up! I don't blame you."

Her brother chuckled and stared at me, "Abi, maybe she will invite the guy over and lock you in the kitchen."

Aha! Gotcha!!.

I did a mental inner dance before replying, "She knows she cannot lock me up na, I will blascatter her face!" I exclaimed in a teasing tone.

She laughed, "It's not only blascatter, see your head."

That was how the rest of the day went. Teasing each other and making fun of Zinny—courtesy of I and Steve—and finally, my crush noticed me.

I enjoyed my night there but I felt really sad since I've not spoken to Chika. I spoke with my mom earlier and she seemed fine but Zinny refused to give me her phone to call Chika.

Her exact words were, "I refuse to be a party to your downfall."

*~*~*~*~*

Maybe if I had listened to her, I won't be in this hospital writing my story while plotting my death. I would have been home safe, probably in university with other of my age mates, I would have been...

The regrets are endless best let sleeping dogs lie than crying over spilled milk. He who has ears should hear and he who doesn't have...

The tears spilled on my book threatening to overwhelm me.

No, I've got to keep going, I've got to keep writing for others to learn.

*~*~*~*~*

The following day, I went to the next room when Zinny and her brother went out. I knocked on the door and waited patiently, nothing happened.

What's doing all this people sef?

I knocked again and without warning or question, the door flung open.

"Who wan break my door na. I owe you even sef I do, you no dey owe pesin?" He ranted without looking out.

Time to put my feminine charms into action. If Zinny wasn't going to help me then I will find help from an outsider.

I looked at the guy and he was cute but his eyes were all red and puffy like he was either sleeping or he was on drugs. From the smell coming from his room, I knew it was the latter.

"Good morning," I greeted shyly, "sorry for disturbing but could you help me with something?"

I flashed him my innocent smile and I saw him gulp nervously and look around his room shyly like he was guilty of what he was doing.

Alaye, I no send you jus gimme your phone mak I comot abeg.

"Sure, fine girl. What is that?" He asked flashing me a smile.

He had the unfortunate issue of being a drug user I might have considered seeing him as a potential friend.

"I need to make a call and I don't have a phone."

"Haba! Big geh like you no get phone? No talk am outside oo."

He went inside and stepped out with his phone unlocking it for me.

"Use SIM two," he stated going back inside but didn't shut the door.

I typed his number quickly and called him. On the second ring, he picked up.

"Hello," I said quietly over the phone.

There was a pause for a while and then...

"My love, what happened? It's everywhere now and I'm so worried about you!" His worried voice sounded over the phone.

I breathed a sigh of relief as I heard his voice. It overwhelmed my senses causing me to think about our intimate moments together.

Then I frowned as I remembered his words.
"What happened?"

His words left me in shock and that marked the beginning of my downfall like Zinny had predicted.
