Chapter 18: Inheritance
Ryan's POV
"Lucas." I froze at the sight. The person I was too ashamed to face was standing right in front of me. His expression was neutral. No hint of anger or disappointment.
I didn't utter a single word and neither did he. I wanted to get out of the place but someday, I had to face him. Face the past. And I began to develop courage after I met Annika. Mainly, after receiving my father's letter.
Lucas moved from his spot, walking towards me. I looked right into his eyes. Challenging to stay away. My body was telling him to stay away. But my gratitude for this guy was dying to tell him how it was all a misunderstanding.
Haans told us both to take a seat infront of him and so we did.
"So, Ryan. I am not the kind to beat around the bush. I'll come straight to the point." Haans was friendly and funny. But he was serious when it came to work. I had no idea of what he was going to say.
"You're 18. Which means you are an adult and can have properties under your name. And by properties, I was referring to the ﹰCompany." He really doesn't beat around the bush.
"Our family owns 90 percent of the shares of the company. 40 are mine and 50 were of your fathers. Now, after your father's death, about which we'll talk later, those 50 percent shares will be going to the respectful owner, the person your father wanted to give his inheritance to. I and the lawyer think it's you." Haans paused before continuing.
"You'll need to start attending the office. To know the employees and to understand the work. I thought you would be majoring in business." He paused again, but he didn't continue.
"I thought Mom was the one with the shares considering she's his wife." Lucas scoffed at my comment.
"Don't do that." I warned him. I began doubting my mother since my father's letter. But that doesn't rub away the efforts she took to raise me.
Lucas glared at me in disbelief. Haans looked at Lucas, warning him with his eyes. However, it was different.
"Ryan, about that." He sighed, "You know how careful your dad was on roads, right?" I nodded.
"I think that might have been a set up." He said looking at his hands. That one thought I was not letting to voice out from underneath.
"Are you telling me it was murder? That my dad didn't die in an accident but he was murdered?" I asked calmly. Haans noticed that.
"Kid, this has been bugging me since years."
"Well that doesn't give you the answer Haans. I need proof." My emotions were out of control. "You can't accuse the woman who raised me since I was 5. You can't suddenly say that the person I love the most, who's now no more, did not die in an accident as I have been believing since years. But was, in fact, the victim of a fucking murder." I stood up with my fists clenched. Haans looked at me with the same calm expression.
He signaled me to sit down. I looked at him for few seconds and sat down. Lucas was glaring at me but I ignored.
"What did your father write in the letter?" He asked folding his hands.
"He wrote to trust no one but you with important things and to be nice with Noah." I looked at Lucas and then again at Haans before continuing. "He also warned me about Mom." I ended.
"Well the decision is yours. The company needs a new owner. Remember, it's the hard work of your grandfather and your father. I won'let that fall into dirty hands I'm hoping to see you there soon." He stood up and left. He didn't mention his name. The company was the hard work of all three of them.
