I pushed through the sea of people swarming in the hall way of Ridgemount high. There was a buzz of happy chatter all over as friends caught up on what they missed about each others life over the summer.
Weird looks were thrown on my way as people scrutinised me. This was the number one reason why I hate being the 'new student '. I held the straps of my bag tightly feeling a shot of nervous downing in me. I quickened my pace and stared down at the paper handed to me by the school principal. It had all the information that needed to keep me on track.
I stopped on locker number 208 which as stated by the paper slip was suppose to be mine for this year. I took a deep breath and swung open the locker. I placed my heavy bag on the floor and unloaded the books into the locker. Once satisfied, I stared into my paper guide and read out to myself "first lesson English." I took out my English note book and text book before locking my locker with my new padlock and placing the keys into my pockets.
"Isn't that your business? I don't see how it concerns me!" The sound of metal hitting against another made me turn my head a little to the right where a black haired tall guy stood. His back facing me as he run his hands through his hair irritated at the person he was conversing with on the phone.
As if sensing my gaze on him, he turned around the phone still placed onto his ears. His crystal blue eyes met mine. He, unlike the others didn't study me rather he looked surprised wiping the scowl on his face and replacing it with a smile. There was a mischievous glint in his crystal blue eyes making it appear bright in a way. Taking the phone off from his ear, he turned around and walked away. I stared at his back, my mind replying his smile and the look he gave me. It was the kind of a look you give to the cashier when he messes with your change by giving you more amount than you deserve. Shaking my head I headed to the classroom and took the sit at the back even though the class was a quarter full. I didn't want to catch anyone's attention for I had enough this morning so I opted for the back seat.
After few minutes, a very tall dark skinned man with pierced ears walked in. He was too bulge and I could swear that he had a gym certificate just by seen his muscles.
"Hello class. Am Damien your English teacher. Before we dive in to our lesson let's get to know each other first. Right?" He rubbed his hands together as his silvery necklace twirled around his neck.
Pacing in front of the board, he started to randomly point at people asking them for introductions."Am Rowdey Austen." I sucked at introductions so when the teacher pointed at me vocalising 'you' with his deep voice, I just breathed out my name.
"You don't look like you belong here. Are you new to this school?" I don't know why but this irked me. He was making me the centre of attention and all eyes were balling out at me. Swallowing my saliva, I confirmed his query. Before he could open his mouth to ask about my personal matters, the door swung open shifting Damien's attention to the guest at the door. The teacher didn't seem annoyed as he stared down at the guy smiling at him.
"Sawyer what's up with this time?" He pointed at the round clock on the wall. It was ten minutes past the time.
"Was caught up in some business. Hope am forgiven. Won't happen again sir." A smile curled up his cheeks showing his perfect milky teeth. He sauntered in and came to abrupt halt, his eyes searching for a place before they found mine and the vacant seat next to mine.
"Hi." He pushed the chair back and settled down. I ignored his greeting and busied myself with removing my pens from the poach and putting them onto my desk.
After some minutes the teacher started scribbling down notes to the board while we copied it harmoniously. After writing the title 'Present perfect tense' (something I never understood through out my school life, pity I know, I suck in grammar) I noticed the guy next to me, Sawyer I think was his name, staring at me. I turned to look at him and before I could utter 'what' he beat me to it and said "can I borrow your pen if you dont mind?" He smiled genuinely at me.
At first I thought that he was trying to spark up a conversation but when I saw the expectant look in his eyes, I shook off the thought and handed him the pen. Uttering a 'thank' you he started taking down the notes. As the teacher started explaining whatsoever he wrote, I felt someone poking me in the waist with a pen. Twisting my neck to the right, I saw large hands pushing a crumpled small paper towards me.
Hey am Sawyer Green, mind if we get to know each other.
Honestly, I didn't want to know or get close to anyone but I knew it would be rude to say "ain't interested" or something along the line. I turned the paper to find a small space and just wrote my name.
After two minutes I found another paper on my desk and irritated I unfolded the paper.
Now friends are we.
I crumpled the paper and turned my attention to the guy sitting sixty centimetres away from me. He for sure was tall enough as he towered me. His crystal blue eyes shining expectantly at me. I stared at him, analysing and studying him as if he was a specimen on a slide.
I smiled at him not realizing that he took my gesture as a yes and smiled back at me. I realized that I was in trouble and my whole plan of staying away from people and keeping solo was going to crush if I let someone in my life as a friend.
