They said we were savages, untamed creatures
In a sea of white faces.
They took us from your light
From your warm embrace, Mother.
They cast us into darkness where
We forgot our names, each other's faces.
There are moments when I think
I remember your name and mine.
Riverbanks and trees
Remind me-
The letters are on the edge of my mind and tongue
But the riverbanks are drowned by stone walls that restrict the flow-
Trees are torn down for miles, their roots screaming out.
When they retrieve us from our holes
And make us look in reflective screens
And make us deny you, Mother
Will you help me come back to you?
Will you help me remember who I am?
