Jonah Argentum is an amnesiac magicless child who found himself in a prestigious magic school named Night Raven College. After being awakened by a talking cat/raccoon named Grim, the gracious headmaster, Dire Crowley, let them stay in the college while he finds a way for Jonah to go home.

Things didn't go as plan. After pissing off a student named Ace Trappola, and got into even more trouble with breaking the one million-madols chandelier, dragging another student named Deuce Spade into this mess, Crowley threatened to expel them all. But with a bit of teamwork, all of them managed to get a magic crystal to fix the chandelier, saving both Ace and Deuce from their expulsion, also enrolling Jonah and Grim as one student in NRC.

The day wasn't over just yet. Ace somehow managed to get himself into another from eating his prefect's, Riddle Rosehearts, tart and was kicked out until he could make a replacement before the Heartslabyul Unbirthday Party. Lucky for him, his three new friends were willing to help, along with two seniors, Trey Clover and Cater Diamond.

The day of the Unbirthday Party had arrived and it seemed that the problem was more than just a stolen tart. Riddle was more strict than they thought be could be, to the point of upholding the rules above all else. Ace and the others of course didn't take this lightly, which resulted in them leaving the party early in annoyance. However, a strange cat-boy named Che'nya appeared and gave them some hint about Riddle's situation. Thus, the trio asked Trey for more information. It turned out that Riddle was raised by strict parents, especially his mother. He must follow every rule she had laid for him, believing it was for the good. Despite this, Ace still could take this, so the headmaster suggested to hold a duel for the position of the Heartslabyul Prefect.

The day of the duel arrived, but it didn't go as plan. Angered by everything, Riddle went on a rampage, which led to him going overblot, a somewhat evil-villain-berserk-mode. Under Jonah's command, all of them were able to snap Riddle out. Jonah also suggested for Riddle to take some days off after the whole overblot.

After the break, Riddle returned to Heartslabyul to apologized. Ace suggested holding another Unbirthday Party since he couldn't enjoy the last one and Riddle had to make his own tart. Riddle agreed and bake the tart with Jonah.

The party went on. Jonah pulled a prank on all of them, but all were played for laughs. That was until Che'nya appeared and teased that Jonah was once was a Royal Sword Academy student, the rival school of NRC. Of course, Jonah couldn't remember that because of the amnesia.

Jonah had some peaceful days after that. Crowley explained about the whole overblot problem, Jonah joined the Board Game Club, meeting a fellow first-year student who saved him from falling off his broom named Epel Felmier, joining the prefect meeting and getting a part-time job at Mostro Lounge, a cafe owned by the Octavinelle Dorm, Azul Ashengrotto.

But, of course, good things must come to an end. With the Interdorm Magishift Tournament was getting closer, some mysterious 'accidents' happened around the top players of various dorms, including Trey. Riddle wanted to investigate this, so the rest of the Heartslabyul Gang, along with the Ramshackle Duo went on an investigation. They also investigated some potential victims, one of them was Jack Howl, a first-year from Savanaclaw. The Savanaclaw didn't take the Heartslabyul Gang walking around their territory lightly, so Jonah challenged Leona Kingscholar, the prefect, in place of the gang. Unfortunately, he failed.

The investigation continued with a kid named Jamil Viper of Scarabia, who claimed that he felt like someone's unique magic was controlling him. Putting everything together, they found out that the culprit of the incidents was Ruggie Bucchi under the order of Leona to take down the top players, including the Diasomnia Prefect, Malleus Draconia. Jack, who couldn't stay silent about the whole dorm cheating, decided to team up with the gang to stop Leona's plan.

The Interdorm Magishift Tournament had finally arrived and the gang managed to stop Savanaclaw plans to take down Diasomnia. Annoyed with the outcome, Leona gave up, but Ruggie and the other members didn't take this lightly. Even more annoyed, Leona unleashed his unique magic, nearly grabbing Ruggie, but Jonah intervened, making him the victim. Leona overblot because of all the pressure, but the gang managed to stop him. Savanaclaw was still allowed to join the magishift competition despite Leona not leading them and it seemed that Leona didn't have a great relationship with his brother.

Leona overblot had casualties, however. Jonah, who got attacked by Leona's unique magic, lost his arm and had to go through long bed rest. When he was allowed to go out, All Hallow's Eve had arrived and Jonah learned about the 'Tale of the Unfortunate Sacrificial Flower', a story of a young woman who was sacrificed to be eaten by a witch but ended up being a soul-eating ghost who was sealed in a golden chest.

When All Hallow's Eve arrived, the Board Game Club, which consisted of Idia Shroud and his brother Ortho, Azul, and Jonah himself had a silent mutual agreement to ditched the main party to play a game. Grim found an old chest and Jonah opened it, which was actually containing the soul-sucking ghost named Maryanne. But fortunately, the Board Game Club managed to fix their problem with a little help from Leona.

Leona and Jonah, along with Ruggie, had a heart-to-heart conversation. It turned out that Leona was the second prince of Afterglow Savana who everyone feared and hated except a few people (namely his nanny and grandfather, who both of them left and died) and the reason why he wanted to take down Malleus was that perhaps everyone would finally accept him as something worthy. Ruggie convinced Leona that he didn't care whether Leona was a second prince or not, he would follow him.

Meanwhile, Jonah had an idea to hold a magishift rematch between Savanaclaw and Ramshackle, convincing Leona that he didn't do this out of revenge but just for fun and not wanting any bad term between him and Leona. The rematch resulted in Savanaclaw winning and they had a celebration.

Too bad for them, the final exam was just around the corner...
