First Light at the Zoo

Darkness ends while the moon sets,
The sun arises in the east and shadows begin to creep.

Birds take flight to sing their tune,
Bones crack like the stems of flowers during winter.

As animals awaken from their sleep,
Cats prowl for their morning meal, hunting along the steel cage,
Bears splash into their morning swim,
Monkeys climb as high as they can

Just for the first glance of the morning sun.

Buckets clang against one another,
here They come.
Meals for one and all,
All the animals are awake.
