One morning, years ago, the heavens rained down and lightning shattered the sky. And on the breeze floated the first flakes of the coming winter. The city held its breath in silence, the typical sounds of life deathly quiet as people locked up to stave off the coming cold.

And just beyond the city lay a small grove, a modest crowd gathered beneath a horde of umbrella's. Among them, two shadows stood out against the rest, the crowd parted around them like the red sea.

There, little Lana Lewis stood, her hand clasped firmly in the palm of her fathers. Her small face stood stoic as around her anguished plea's tore through the air, sobs and gasps cutting through the silence. And though she was surrounded, never before had she felt so lonely.

It was a sorrowful thing, little Lana the motherless. People looked on in pity, never quiet able to meet her eyes. Whispers shifted around her like a current, washing over her until finally, she couldn't keep her head above the water.

"Poor little Lana, how she must feel."

"I couldn't imagine losing my mother at such a young age!"

"A pity"

"I imagine she'll end up in an orphanage after her father breaks. No man could stand that!"

And the whispers kept coming, beating down on her until a rushing filled her ears, and she was tumbling through the water-down, down, down.

And little Lana broke, surrounded by these strangers who pretended to care. But they didn't, they couldn't understand. They didn't feel what she felt. Not really. And so she wailed, and kicked and cried until she fell to her knee's before the coffin, her chubby knee's scraping against the ground.

A shocked silence followed, eyes staring on as she felt her heart shatter and cut up her insides until she was screaming at the sky, screaming and screaming. And then all that was left was a broken sound, and even when her throat dried up and nothing came out, her mouth hung open in silent agony, fingers clenched in the grass as tears made a salty path down her face.
