Pin sighed.
Needle, her coworker, huffed and threw down the shoebox she was holding. The rubber soles flew out of the box. They clunked and bounced clumsily against the hardwood floor. The sound startled Pin from her thoughts.
"Will you stop that?" The silver haired girl put her hand on her hips. "This is like your 50th sigh today."
Pin looked at the ground. "I'm sorry. I'm just worried. It's been two days..."
Needle's expression clouded into an apologetic one. "He hasn't answered your calls or texts?"
Pin shook her head. "He's not even reading my texts, Needle. I'm being left on delivered. I even went to his apartment and knocked on his door. No response. He just doesn't want to talk to me."
Needle bent down to pick up the shoes she dropped. "I don't blame him, Pin. He really liked you."
"And I really liked him!" Pin bursted out. "But back then, he didn't like me back. This is on him. I moved on. Now he has to."
Needle remained silent.
Pin shook her head. "He's my best friend. If we do end up together, what if it ends? He's too important of a person to lose..."
Needle swallowed and put the shoebox on the shelf. "I think you've already lost him."
Pin said nothing, simply opting to watch her coworker turn and leave to go help someone at the register.
She really couldn't imagine a life without Coiny.
He was her best friend. Until he confessed the first time. She said no. He used to work in this stupid shoe store with her, but after that conversation, he put in his two weeks. He was quitting. He found a new job.
A job away from her. They still talked, but...
Everything fell apart after that.
Confession after confession. Plea after plea. It would hurt every time she told him no. It would hurt every time she put a finger to his lips in an attempt to shush him. It would hurt to see the look of pain flash in his eyes.
Her heart was screaming to go to him, but she was scared. He didn't want her before, what if he doesn't want her in the future?
He wouldn't want her in the future. Who would?
She pulled out her phone and sent Coiny another text. She decided to keep positive. Maybe he'll respond to this one. She pressed the send button and let out yet another sigh.
"Yo Pin."
The redhead whipped around, her silver eyes alert. A pinkhaired boy in a MePhone Security uniform was standing behind her, regarding her with a disinterested expression.
"Oh, hi Eraser!" Pin chuckled nervously. "I didn't see you there!"
Eraser raised an eyebrow. "Sorry to interrupt your thinking session or whatever, but, I need some help with shoes."
Pin laughed slightly. "Ah, I see! What do you need help with?"
Eraser pointed to his foot.
Pin looked down.
"You're missing a shoe...?"
He grunted and nodded.
"Where did it go?" Pin was curious
Eraser shrugged his shoulders. "It fell off, I guess."
"Uh, so do you want me to find you a new pair of shoes?"
Eraser inhaled slowly. "No, just the one."
Pin opened her mouth, then closed it, unable to find the words to say. After a beat, she opened her mouth and said, "I can only sell you shoes in pairs..."
Eraser huffed. "Fine. They gotta be the same brand and color though, these are my work shoes. Gotta match the uniform, you know."
Pin laughed. "Okay, yeah! What shoe size are you?"
The pinkhaired boy looked confused. "What?"
The girl stared back.
They stared at each other for a few more seconds.
"What. Size. Are. Your. Feet?" Pin forced herself not to insult the idiot in front of her.
"I actually don't know." Eraser replied truthfully.
Pin inhaled sharply. "Take off your other shoe and give it to me," she commanded. Eraser complied, sitting down on the bench to pull the black footwear from his foot. After he finished this, he handed her his shoe.
Pin lifted the shoe tongue and peered at the label. "You're a size 12. You actually have kind of massive feet."
"Is that a bad thing or a good thing?"
"It depends." Pin answered vaguely. She threw the shoe back at Eraser, who caught it as gracefully as if he was playing hot potato, and turned to search among the shelves for the appropriate shoes.
"You didn't have to throw it like that dude," Eraser grunted.
"You're right, I didn't." Pin found the shoebox that held the size and color of the shoes Eraser so desired and pulled it off the shelf. She walked over to him.
"Here," she said as she handed him the shoebox. "Head over to the register up front and pay."
Eraser grabbed the shoebox and causally moved towards Needle. The silverhaired girl greeted him with a smile.
Pin eyed Eraser. He wasn't so badly built. In fact, he looked good. Very muscular. She smirked slightly, then went back to organizing the shoeboxes on the shelves. Customers always moved the contents around, so she figured she might as well start organizing while work was slow.
The status of her text to Coiny went from delivered to read.
