My hands were shaking and my legs felt like jelly but I had to hold it together, Kate and Charlotte needed me. I pushed the door open, surprised to find no security at the gates which was weird. It struck another cord with me, even they wouldn't hear anything to help.
"Charlie?" I called out into the quiet household but no one replied.
I left the door ajar behind me as I entered and walked straight across the hallway and into the great room. The same room I was in with Grey earlier today, how things have drastically changed since then.
I opened the door slowly and could hear muffled noises. A gasp broke my lips as I looked up with wide eyes. The table in front of the fireplace had been pushed out of the way and it now housed two chairs from Charlottes dining room. Charlotte on one chair and Kate on the other.
Both hands and legs were tied to the chair and tape covering their mouths. Charlotte looked and appeared to be fine but Kate had a nasty bruise forming on her cheek. Both of them had tears rolling down their cheeks, they were scared and rightfully so. This was all my fault.
Tears welled my eyes looking at them, if only I had called the police earlier then Charlie might have not even been here now.
Benny's words voiced through my head "Don't play hero."
He was right. I wasn't Charlie's hero and I shouldn't have made the decision to try and cover up his tracks because I felt like he needed help. He was in the wrong and what he's done is wrong. These two women that are sitting in front of me scared to death matter more to me than Charlie could ever matter.
Kate was my best friend, always has been and always will be the sister I never had. Charlotte was Greys Mum, she was practically family from when I was little.
I rushed over to Kate pulling the rope that was around her legs and started to untie it. Luckily it came out easily and I started to work on her hands. She was crying hysterically so before taking the tape off her mouth, I made a motion of my finger to my lips telling her to hush. She listened.
"Kate it's ok." I told her giving her a quick hug, "I left the front door open. I need to you to go to my parents house and ask for help, call the police on the way. Can you do that?" I asked her in a rushed whisper as I crouched in front of her.
"I don't have a phone, he took it." She managed to get out between sobs. "I can't leave you hear Emily, he's a psycho." She whispered shaking her head.
"I need you to get help. If you want to help me, do that please. I'll give you my mobile." I reached into my pocket handing over my phone and she looked from me to Charlotte with a small nod.
"Go." I told her and she did bolting out the door quicker than a flash. She wasn't the very quiet on her departure and I winced at that.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to Charlotte and started undoing the ropes on her legs and arms. I pulled the tape of gently and instantly she leaned forward pulling me into a hug and placing a kiss on my cheek.
"Emily what have you gotten yourself into?" She whispered as tears pooled in her eyes.
"Nothing." I promised her, "He's my ex...I don't think he's mentally very well." I told her truthfully with a sad smile as she nodded.
"You need to get out of here Emily." She demanded, "He has a knife." She told me what I already knew but I had my own weapon too.
"No, I need you to hide." I told her quickly, "Grey has already lost a parent and I won't watch him lose another, not today anyways." She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes.
